Garmin periodically releases software updates to add features or improve the performance of our devices. Many newer Garmin marine chartplotters accept the software update via the SD Card slot inside of the device. The required software update can be downloaded from the Garmin website, or purchased directly from Garmin.

Updates purchased directly from Garmin are programmed onto a 4GB SD card. Unfortunately, some Garmin devices running older versions of software are unable to recognize any SD card larger than 2GB. In these cases, the update must be downloaded from the Garmin website onto an SD Card with at least 1.4GB of free space, but is no larger than 2GB.

This SD card capacity limitation affects the following devices and software versions:

  • GPSMAP 400, GPSMAP 500, and GPSMAP 505 series devices running software version 3.90 or below.
  • GPSMAP 4000 and GPSMAP 5000 series devices running software version 4.00 or below.

To download and install an update to a GPSMAP 400, GPSMAP 500, or GPSMAP 505 series device, please follow the steps under "Option 1" on the FAQ titled "How do I update the internal operating software of my GPSMAP 400 or 500 series device?".

To download and install an update a GPSMAP 4000 or GPSMAP 5000 series device, please follow the steps under "Option 1"  on the FAQ titled "How do I update the internal operating software of my GPSMAP 4000 or 5000 series chartplotter?".
