Charging While Operating an inReach Device

When connecting an inReach® device to an external power source with a USB cable, three modes are available:

  • Charging

  • Operation

  • Charging while Operating the inReach handheld

Charging or Operation modes are the only options when the inReach device is connected to a computer with a USB cable. A standard computer USB 1.0 or 2.0 port will only output 500mA to the connected inReach device, and USB 3.0 outputs 900mA. Due to this, either choose to charge the battery or operate the device, but not both at the same time.

A standard AC charger outputs between 1000mA and 3000mA, which is far more than computer USB ports and allows for charging and operating the inReach device at the same time.

See the device's owner's manual for additional charging information.

Using Third-Party AC Chargers, Cables, and Other Accessories

It is best to use a Garmin-branded AC adapter or USB Cable to charge the device as these are designed specifically with Garmin devices in mind. Compatible Garmin-brand AC adapters and USB cables can be purchased from the Garmin website with the steps below.
