Formatting and Preparing a USB Drive for a Chrysler Navigation Software Update

A USB drive may require formatting before it can be used to update the software on a Chrysler navigation system.  

Note: These instructions are only for formatting a blank USB drive. Pre-loaded media received from HERE maps for Chrysler devices should not be formatted.  It is important to avoid formatting the pre-loaded drive as this will leave it in an unusable state.

To Format the USB Drive: 


Windows 

Step A: Format the USB Flash Drive 

1. Insert the USB drive into the computer

2. Press the Windows key + E

4. Locate the drive representing the USB drive

  • To determine which Drive is the USB drive:
    • Remove the USB drive from the computer
    • Observe which drive disappears from the list
    • Insert the USB drive again

5. Right-Click on the USB drive

6. Click Format

7. Verify the File System is FAT or FAT32 

8. Change Allocation unit size to Default allocation size

9. Ensure Quick Format is checked

10. Click Start


Step B: Preparing the USB Flash Drive 

1. Open the USB flash drive

2. Right-click in the blank space

3. Click New

4. Click Folder 

5. Enter Garmin for the folder name

6. Open the Garmin folder

7. Right-click in the blank space

8. Click New

9. Click Text Document

10. Enter the name Garmin for the text document

11. Safely Eject and Remove the USB flash drive from the computer

The USB flash drive will now be prepared to perform the software update for your vehicle. 


These steps will format the USB drive to be readable by Garmin Express and the Chrysler navigation system.  

Try another USB flash drive if an error is received or formatting the USB drive fails to resolve the issue.


Mac 


Step A: Format the USB Flash Drive 

1. Insert the USB drive into the computer

2. Open Spotlight (CMD + Space) on the keyboard

3. Type Disk Utility into the Spotlight search box

4. Press Return

5. Click the parent icon for the USB drive in the sidebar on the left

  • This is not necessary on Mac OS X 10.12 and newer
  • To determine which drive is the USB drive:
    • Remove the USB drive from the computer
    • Observe which drive disappears from the list
    • Insert the USB drive again
  • See Honda Map Update USB Not Detected by Garmin Express on a Mac if the computer does not recognize the USB drive

6. Click Erase at the top of Disk Utility

7. Select MS-DOS (FAT) in the Format drop-down menu

8. Type a name/title for the USB drive

  • Do not leave the name as "UNTITLED" or "NO NAME"

9. Click Erase


Step B: Preparing the USB Flash Drive 

1. Open Finder

2. Open the USB flash drive 

3. Click File in the menu bar

4. Click New Folder

5. Name the folder Garmin

6. Open Applications in Finder 

7. Open TextEdit 

  • Do not enter any text into the document

8. Click File in the menu bar

9. Click Save

10. Enter Garmin in the Save As field

11. Click the Where drop-down menu to choose the save location

12. Choose the USB flash drive 

13. Click Save

14. Close TextEdit

15. Open Finder

16. Open the USB flash drive

17. Drag the Garmin text document into the Garmin folder 

18. Eject the USB from the Mac 

The USB flash drive will now be prepared to perform the software update for your vehicle. 


These steps will format the USB drive to be readable by Garmin Express and the Chrysler navigation system.  

Try another USB flash drive if an error is received or formatting the USB drive fails to resolve the issue.
