Range Issues and Troubleshooting

Many of our devices work off line-of-sight range and ideal weather conditions. There are many factors that will reduce the range on dog training devices. Below are factors that will effect the range on the dog training and tracking systems.

Range

Environmental Factors

Environmental factors like trees, bushes, buildings, powerlines, cell towers, Wi-Fi, and rain/humidity can affect the range of the unit. In order to get the best range in conditions that are not ideal hold the remote vertically above your head or try moving to higher ground.

Handheld Use

The most common errors when using the handheld is pointing the handheld at the dog, or having the handheld resting on/too close to your body. For best practices, holding the remote vertically above your head will get you the best range.

Testing the System

Two Person Test

  1. One person holds the handheld, above their head, away from their body with antenna pointing toward the sky.
  2. The other person holds the collar by their side as though it were in the position and height of an actual dog.
  3. Get to an open area, line of sight, free from obstructions or other interference.
  4. Do no use cellphones or other radio equipment and do not be near vehicles
  5. Stay away from power lines and other sources of interference
  6. Before you start, test with the Tone or Vibration feature to ensure it works at close range
  7. The two people should start close together, then walk away from each other.
  8. Have the handheld user send a signal periodically. The holder of the dog device can hear the tone or vibration and will see a solid green light on the collar as they walk away.
  9. If the dog device holder stops hearing the signal, that range should be the mark for the capability of the system.

One Person Test

NOTE: This will not be as accurate with out a second person to assist. Please try to recruit a friend, family member or neighbor if you can.

  1. Get to an open area, line of sight, free from obstructions or other interference. Do not use cellphones or other radio equipment to communicate. Do not be near any vehicles. Stay away from power lines and other towers.
  2. Turn on the collar
  3. Set the collar on a wooden or non-metallic pedestal or post at height and position as if it were on the dog
  4. Set the handheld to Tone.
  5. Hold the handheld, above your head, away from your body with antenna pointing directly up and skyward.
    • Do not point the antenna at the dog device, that can significantly reduce range.
  6. Walk away from the collar and periodically send the Tone command. You can see the collar light up solid green while you are pressing.
  7. If the dog device stops showing a solid green light and no tone is heard when the tone is delivered, that should be the mark for the range capability of the system.

Re-Pairing the Handheld and Collar Together

Many range issues can be resolved by re-pairing the handheld and collar. The following articles provide steps for your system.
