Garmin Mechanic Acceleration Feature

The Acceleration feature of Garmin Mechanic measures a copious amount of performance metrics during a sprint over a predetermined distance. The results of this function are used to quantify a vehicle’s performance. This data may be used to measure a baseline for which to compare to subsequent runs after modifying the vehicle’s configuration. It may also be used to compare one vehicle to another. The measurements made in this function are made available by the Garmin ecoRoute HD as well as the phone or tablet’s built-in accelerometer.

To measure a vehicle’s acceleration capabilities, follow these directions after connecting to ecoRoute HD:1

  1. If unable to access a purpose-built drag strip, on a flat, straight area of pavement, measure the length of available surface
  2. On Garmin Mechanic’s main menu, touch the phone or tablet’s Menu soft key
  3. Touch Acceleration
  4. Touch either the Shift Point or Rev Limit indicator, the circle below each title
  5. For Start Recording, select the desired delay between pressing Start and beginning recording
  6. For Record Until, select the distance or time for which the measurements will be performed
    • Note: Remember to leave plenty of room to slow the vehicle!
  7. For Shift Point, select the desired RPM at which the Shift Point light should indicate the driver shift
    • Note: Rev Limit is set in the vehicle profile prior to accessing the acceleration tool.
  8. Press the yellow button to save settings
  9. Position the vehicle at one end of the pavement
  10. Come to a complete stop
  11. Press the Start button in Garmin Mechanic
  12. Wait for the countdown
  13. Accelerate as quickly as possible until having traveled the predetermined distance or time

1This test must be performed on a closed course. The vehicle will quickly exceed all posted speed limits during this test.
