Transfer user data from MapSource to a GPSMAP 4x0 or 5x0 series device

MapSource is a program that is installed on a computer when any of Garmin's maps that come on a CD or DVD are installed to the computer.

Once MapSource is installed on the computer, it will need to be updated to the latest version, which can be downloaded from this link.

An SD card is required to transfer the information from MapSource to the GPSMAP 400 or 500 series device. Most devices can use up to a 32GB SD card but can be limited to a 2GB card depending on what software the device has istalled. The It is recommended that the SD card is prepared before attempting to transfer any data. 

Preparing an SD card

  1. Insert the SD card into the device while the device is OFF
  2. Power on the device
  3. When the warning screen appears, the card is prepared and can be removed from the device

Transferring user data from MapSource to the SD card

  1. Open MapSource
    1. Create the new user data, or open a saved file with the user data
  2. Ensure all of the userdata needed is listed in the correct tabs (i.e. Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks) that appear on the left side of the MapSource program
  3. Insert the SD card into the computer
  4. Click Transfer at the top of the screen
  5. Select Send to Device
  6. When the new box appears, make sure the correct devices is selected in the Device box
  7. In the section titled What To Send, uncheck the option for Maps
  8. Make sure the other options like Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks are checked, if applicable
  9. Click the Send button
  10. Click the OK button when the message "The data was successfully sent" appears

At this point, the data has been transferred to the SD card.

Transferring user data from the SD card to the device

  1. With the device powered on, insert the SD card into the device
  2. Highlight Manage Card and press the Select button
  3. Highlight either Merge From Card or Replace From Card and press the Select button
    • Merge From Card will add the data from the SD card to the existing data saved to the internal memory of the device
    • Replace From Card will delete the data already saved to the internal memory of the device and overwrite it with the data from the SD card
  4. Highlight USER DATA and press the Select button

The data will now be copied from the card to the internal memory of the device and can be used at any time.
