Registering my New or Exchanged Automotive Device Using Garmin Express

Note: If the display on the automotive device is blank or only displays a battery icon  when connected to the computer, first charge the device while driving using the vehicle power cable to ensure that the device has enough power to communicate with the computer. See the  troubleshooting section of this FAQ for more information.


To Register your Device for the First Time

1. Connect your Garmin device to the computer with the appropriate USB data cable

  • NOTE: In-dash systems should use the applicable SD card or USB flash drive.

  • Note: The Garmin Dash Cam™ Mini and Garmin Dash Cam™ Tandem must use the shorter included 1.5M (4') cable when connecting to the computer.

2. Open the Garmin Express™ software

For instructions on installing Garmin Express, see  this FAQ

3. When a new device is connected, a message prompting you to add a device should appear

If this message does not appear, click Add a Device.

4. When Express recognizes your connected device, click Add Device

If Express does not recognize your device, see the  troubleshooting section at the bottom of this FAQ.

5. In the box on this screen, enter the email address which you would like your device to be registered under

If you have an existing Garmin account, it is recommended to use the same email address you used to create that account so that your device appears in your list of registered products.

6. Click Next

If you don't see the Next option, follow the steps in Garmin Express Does Not Fit on My Computer Screen.

7. Enter a nickname for this device if desired

8. Click Next

9. Click Yes or No to agree or disagree with anonymous data collection, if prompted

The device will now be registered to the email address entered in step 5 above.


To Register a Device Already Added to the Garmin Express™ Application

1. Open Garmin Express

2. Select your previously-added device

3. Click Tools & Content

4. Click Register This Device

5. Enter your email address in the provided field and click Register

Your device is now registered.

Some devices may display a message when connecting to a USB cable. See Device Displays the Message "The attached cable cannot currently charge your device.".

Garmin Express Displays a Server Error Message.


For Instructions on Updating the Software and Maps in Garmin Express:

  1. Go to Garmin Support Center
  2. Type in your Garmin device name or serial number (Ex. Garmin DriveSmart™ 66)
  3. In the "Search for a solution" box, type in keywords Updating Automotive Maps and Software with Garmin Express, then press Enter or Return
  4. Click on Updating Automotive Maps and Software with Garmin Express
