Getting Started with the Foretrex 801/901

If you are setting up a Foretrex® 801 or 901 outdoor navigator for the first time, the following steps will walk you through the process to help you get the most out of your new Garmin device.

Setting up the Foretrex

When power on the Garmin device for the first time, you'll be prompted to configure some settings.

  1. Insert two AAA batteries.

    ONE POWER

    • Hold to turn the navigator on.
    • While powered on, hold to access the power menu:
      • ENABLE NVG MODE: Select to reduce backlight intensity for compatibility with night vision goggles.
      • ENTER WATCH MODE: Select to enter a low-power mode that locks the buttons and maximizes battery life.
      • ENTER EXPEDITION MODE: Select to manually enter expedition mode and maximize battery life. In expedition mode, the navigator collects fewer GPS track points and turns off the Bluetooth connection.
      • ENTER STEALTH MODE: Select to turn off wireless communications and prevent the storage and sharing of your GPS position.
      • POWER OFF: Select to turn off the navigator.
    • Press to turn the backlight on and off.
    • Press 5 times in less than 2 seconds to activate the kill switch.

    TWO PAGE/GO TO

    • Press to scroll through the main pages in sequence.
    • Press to go back to the previous view from a menu or option.
    • Hold to navigate to a waypoint.

    THREE ENTER/MARK

    • Press to open the menu for the page.
    • Hold to mark a waypoint.

    FOUR UP/DOWN

    • Press to scroll through menus and pages.
    • Press to zoom in or out on the map page.

  3. Choose your language by scrolling through the list using the UP and DOWN buttons, press ENTER to select a language.
  4. Pair your Foretrex with your phone.
