Unable to View Videos or Live View through Wi-Fi in the Garmin Drive App

If you are experiencing an error or Wi-Fi connection issues with your dash cam such as the following, see the common fixes and troubleshooting below:

  • "Failed to load feed. Try another camera, or try again later"
  • "Failed to Load the Video Stream"
  • "Unable to Join the Network"
  • "We Need to Fix Your Connection"
  • "Wi-Fi Connection Failed"
  • "Your connection to your Garmin device is being interrupted by a VPN or ad-blocking service. Disable that service or allow network traffic for the Garmin Drive app to continue."
  • "Your phone failed to discover your cameras Wi-Fi network"
  • Spinning circle, does not load, or appears to be stuck
  • Video thumbnails buffering/spinning/not loading; Not seeing all videos (assuming the gallery date and filters are set properly)
  • Initially connects to the dash cam's Wi-Fi network to view videos or Live View, but subsequent tries fail

Level 1 - Try These Common Fixes:

  • Check for Possible Memory Card Issues

To Extend the Useful Life of your microSD card, Garmin Recommends the Following:

    • Format the memory card at least once every 6 months, after saving any stored video you want to keep.

    • Replace the memory card periodically due to the dash camera recording continuously.

    • Turn off the device when your vehicle is not in use to prevent the dash camera from recording unneeded footage

    • Use a memory card with a higher storage capacity.

      • Higher-capacity memory cards are overwritten less frequently and will usually last longer.

    • Use a high-quality memory card with a speed rating of class 10 or faster, purchased from a high-quality manufacturer and a reputable vendor.

      • When choosing a memory card, select one specifically designed for dash cams. These cards offer greater endurance and can withstand continuous read-write cycles. Additionally, they are engineered to handle the extreme temperatures and vibrations commonly encountered in a vehicle.

NOTE: Use only authentic microSD cards with thickness specs 0.7mm +/- 0.1mm to avoid slot damage.

Memory cards that may serve this purpose include those listed below. Before making a decision, it’s advisable to examine the manufacturer’s specifications and warranty to ensure that the product aligns with your intended purpose.

        BrandFamily
        ADATAHigh Endurance
        Samsung Pro Endurance
        SanDisk

        High Endurance

        Max Endurance

        TranscendHigh Endurance

Note that if a memory card is used in a way that is not recommended by its manufacturer without being specifically designed for it, such as use in a high-endurance environment like a dash cam, the manufacturer's warranty might not cover any resulting failure or replacement.

  • Phone Requirements

    • Ensure your phone meets the system requirements for the Garmin Drive™ app

      • Android phones and tablets require Android version 9.0 or later:

        • Wi-Fi and Cellular capability are required for full functionality
        • The Garmin Drive app will not be available in the Google Play Store if the app is incompatible with the device being used
        • Trying to install the app to an incompatible device from the Garmin website will prompt this error message: "Your device isn't compatible with this version"

Apple phones and tablets require iOS 16.4 or later:

        • Wi-Fi and Cellular capability are required for full functionality
        • Apple only includes the GPS chipset in the Wi-Fi + Cellular models

    • Check for updates to the phone's operating system

      • Android

NOTE: These steps will vary depending on the phone and OS combination

        1. Open the phone's Settings menu

        2. Touch Software Update or System Updates

        3. Touch Download and install or Check for system updates

        4. Touch Download or Yes,  then Install Now if updates are available

        Apple

NOTE: These steps will vary depending on the phone and iOS combination

        1. Open the phone's Settings menu

        2. Touch General

        3. Touch Software Update

        4. Touch Download and Install, then Install Now if updates are available

    • Ensure your phone's permissions are enabled

    • Ensure that Wi-Fi and/or mobile data is enabled on your phone or tablet

      • The Garmin Drive app must have permission to access your phone's mobile/cellular data for using some dash cam functions.

      • Consult your phone manufacturer for assistance to turn on these services.

  • Check for Garmin Software Updates

  • Toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Off, then Back On

    • These are typically found in your phone's Settings.  Consult your phone manufacturer for assistance if you are unable to locate them.

  • If Using Wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, Temporarily Disconnect

    • If you’re using wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, your phone connects to your vehicle via Wi-Fi. This can make it tricky to connect your phone to your dash cam’s exclusive private Wi-Fi for tasks like viewing the gallery, aligning the camera, or updating the dezl or Garmin Drive app. To fix this, temporarily disconnect Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on your car’s screen. This will free up your phone’s Wi-Fi to connect to the dash cam.

    • If you don’t want to disconnect, try doing these tasks when your Apple CarPlay or Android Auto system is powered off.

  • Ensure the Dash Cam is Receiving Adequate Power

    • Dash cams without a screen may display a solid green light. This indicates the device is connected to a computer or another low-power USB outlet. The dash cam is not receiving enough power to pair with the Garmin Drive app.

    • Dash cams with a screen may display an image with the Garmin logo and garmin.com/express or garmin.com/dashcamvideos. This indicates the device is connected to a computer or another low-power USB outlet. The dash cam is not receiving enough power to pair with the Garmin Drive app.

    • If your dash cam is not receiving enough power, it is recommended to power it using the longer power cable and the Dual USB Adapter that came with it, plugging directly into a 12V power outlet or cigarette lighter outlet in the vehicle.

Proceed to the troubleshooting below if needed.

Level 2 - Next, Take These Steps if You are Unable to Connect to the Garmin Drive App:

  • Power Off, Then Restart Your Dash Cam

    • Press and hold the power button and slowly count to 20 to fully power off the dash cam.

    • Dash Cam Mini, Mini 2, Mini 3, and Tandem - unplug the device from the power source to power off.

  • Restart Your Phone

    • Additionally, restart the Garmin Drive app.
  • Disable VPN and Ad Blockers on the Phone or Tablet

    • Disable any VPN active on the phone. VPNs can interfere with the Wi-Fi on the phone by masking the IP address.

    • Disable ad blockers on the phone.

    • See the phone's owner's manual or contact the manufacturer for instructions. Both can cause connectivity issues with the Garmin Drive™ app.

Level 3 - The Above Did Not Resolve It - Let's Reset All and Start Fresh:

  • Uninstall the Garmin Drive app

    • Android:

      1. Touch and hold the Garmin Drive App icon

      2. Touch Uninstall

      3. Touch OK

      Apple:

      1. Touch and hold the Garmin Drive App icon

      2. Touch Remove

      3. Touch Delete App

      4. Touch Delete

The app and its updates can be downloaded in the Google Play Store for Android or the App Store for Apple.

  • Fully Shut Down the Phone for at Least 1 Minute

    • This is not a restart.

    • Be sure to completely shutdown your phone before proceeding.

      • This will clear the cache Wi-Fi passwords for the connected dash cam on Android phones.

      • It should then connect again the next time, but may eventually stop connecting due to this password caching. Repeat these restarting phone steps if needed.

      • See your phone's documentation for instructions on fully turning off the phone.

  • Master Reset / Restore the Dash Cam

    • Restore a Garmin dash cam to its factory default settings.

NOTE: This will not delete saved or unsaved photos or videos.
