Transfer user data from MapSource to a GPSMAP 162 or 168

To get user data like waypoints, routes, and tracks from the MapSource program to this device, some additional equipment is needed:

The first item needed is an A/C PC cable that will allow this device to connect to an AC outlet in the house and then a serial port of a computer.

  1. If using a GPSMAP 162, you will need a 7 pin A/C PC cable (no longer available from Garmin)
  2. If using a GPSMAP 168, you will need this 18 pin A/C PC cable (no longer available from Garmin)

If the computer you are using does not have a serial port, you will also need a Serial to USB converter cable.

It is recommended to also updated the MapSource program to the latest version. The update for this program can be downloaded from this link.

Once MapSource has been updated and the device is connected to the computer, a setting on the GPS device will need to be checked. Please follow these instructions:

  1. With the device powered ON, press the Menu button twice to access the Main Menu
  2. Highlight the Comm tab on the left side of the screen
  3. Press the Right arrow button one time
  4. Press the Enter button
  5. Highlight Garmin Data Transfer and press the Enter button

Now that the device is setup properly, please follow these instructions to transfer the data from MapSource to the device:

  2. Create the new user data or open a saved file with the user data already in it
  3. Ensure that all of the userdata needed appears in the correct tabs on the left side of the MapSource program (i.e. waypoints, routes, and tracks tab)
  4. Click Transfer at the top of the screen
  5. Choose Send To Device
  6. In the new box that appears, make sure the device is set to GPSMAP 162 or GPSMAP 168
    1. If the device is no listed, please click the Find Device button
    2. If the device is still not listed, click the drop down menu and choose the device
  7. In the section of this windows titled "What to Send", make sure that Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks have a check mark beside them (if applicable)
  8. Click the Send button
  9. Click the OK button when the message "The data was successfully sent" appears

At this point, the data has now been transferred to the internal memory of the device and can be used at any time.
