Setting Up MapShare For Professional Accounts
The MapShare™ page is a feature that allows inReach® satellite communicator users to be seen on an internet browser accessible map. Viewers of the MapShare webpage are able to see the user's location, tracking progress, and messages. When MapShare is enabled, a unique MapShare website address (URL) is available. The dedicated website address can be shared with followers and message recipients in several ways.
IMPORTANT: MapShare links are public for anyone to find and view. Admins should use a password to protect their MapShare page if necessary.
Enabling MapShare for the Entire Account
Log into the Garmin Explore™ website with administrator credentials.
Go to My Info.
Select Social.
Select Disabled.
Different options will become available or will be hidden for the administrator depending on if MapShare is enabled or disabled by the administrator as outlined below.
MapShare Options for the Professional Account Holder (Super Admin)
Follow the instructions below to turn on the MapShare page.
Log in with the Super Administrator credentials from the Garmin Explore website.
Select the My Info tab.
Select the Social tab.
Select MapShare: Off to turn on the MapShare. If you see MapShare: On, the MapShare is already on and no action is needed.
When MapShare: On is selected the MapShare URL will be shown.
NOTE: The account MapShare link will show all groups and users.
MapShare settings and filters allow for the ability to customize your MapShare page to suit your preferences. For example, you can set a password for your MapShare page to restrict who can see your locations, or choose to allow MapShare visitors to only see some of the types of messages you send to the website. Use the instructions below to customize your MapShare options.
Log in with the Super Administrator credentials from the Garmin Explore website.
Select the My Info tab.
Select Social.
Select MapShare Settings or Filter MapShare Data and make desired changes.
Name and/or Description - These fields are optional to personalize your MapShare. For example: If you were traveling to Yosemite for a week with your family, you could put a name like "Family Yosemite Trip" and give a description of the trip, such as "We are hiking and camping near Mariposa Grove for the week. Enjoy following our adventure!".
Password - Adding a password allows for greater control of who is able to view locations and messages shared to your MapShare. Only people with the password will be able to log in and view your MapShare page.
Allow map viewers to send you messages and/or Allow map viewers to locate you - Checking these boxes allows viewers certain options, such as sending a message to your inReach through MapShare without you messaging them first, or requesting the location of your inReach communicator.
NOTE: The options will still be visible if these boxes are unchecked, but viewers will not be able to use them.
Show waypoints created in the field on MapShare - Displays waypoints that you created on the device. This is helpful for letting viewers see locations you have either stopped at, or are going to.
NOTE: This only applies to waypoints created in the field on the inReach SE®, inReach SE®+, inReach Explorer®, inReach Explorer®+, and inReach® Mini communicators. Waypoints created in the field on the Alpha® 200i, GPSMAP® 66i/67i/86i/86sci, inReach® Mini 2, Montana® 700i/750i, and newer handhelds and communicators cannot be sent to MapShare through inReach.
Hide Older MapShare Tracking Data - This allows you to set a date, and hide all track data from that date and older. This is an easy way to make sure that only your most recent track data shows on MapShare.
Make Collections Visible on MapShare - Your collections contain waypoints, routes, tracks, and activities, and sometimes you may not wish to share that data. Use this filter to only share collections that you would like others to see. This can also be useful for ensuring the map for your viewers is not cluttered.
The Sent to MapShare collection will not be listed here because it is a collection permanently shared to your MapShare page and can only be turned off when MapShare is disabled.
Choose Primary Collection for the Earthmate App - Set the primary collection to determine where new data from Earthmate is stored. If that same collection is also selected under Make Collections Visible on MapShare, the data will also display on MapShare.
NOTE: You will only see this option if you are using the Earthmate app, but do not have an Earthmate compatible device in your account. Compatible devices are the inReach SE/SE+/Explorer/Explorer+ and the inReach Mini communicators.
- Select Save Changes.
