Transfer user data from MapSource to a GPSMAP 172 or 178 series device

To get user data like waypoints, routes, and tracks from the MapSource program to a GPSMAP 172 or 178 series device, three additional items will be required:

1. A blank Garmin Data Card
2. A Garmin Data Card Programmer
3. A computer running a 32-bit version of Windows

If the Data Card Programmer has not been used on this computer before, the drivers may need to be installed. For instructions on installing these drivers, see Related Content.

It is recommended to also update the MapSource program to the latest version.

Once MapSource has been updated and the drivers for the Programmer installed, please follow these directions to transfer the data from MapSource to the Garmin Data Card:

1. Open MapSource
2. Create the new user data or open a saved file with the user data already in it
3. Ensure that all of the user data needed appears in the correct tabs on the left side of the MapSource program (i.e. waypoints, routes, and tracks tabs)
4. Click Transfer at the top of the screen
5. Choose Send To Device
6. In the new box that appears, make sure the device is set to USB Data Card Programmer
   1. If USB Data Card Programmer is not shown, please click the drop down menu button and choose USB Data Card Programmer
7. In the section of this window titled "What to Send", make sure that Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks have a check mark beside them (if applicable)
8. Click the Send button
9. Click the OK button when the message "The data was successfully sent" appears

At this point, the data is now saved on the Garmin Data Card. Please follow these instructions for copying the data from the Data Card to the internal memory of the device:

1. With the device powered ON, insert the card into the device
2. Highlight Manage User Card and press the Enter button
3. Make sure the options like User Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks has a check mark beside them (if applicable)
4. Look for the words From Card in the lower left corner of the screen and press the button located directly below these words
5. Choose either Merge or Replace (located in the lower left corner of the screen) and press the button below your choice
   • Merge will copy the data from the card and add it to the existing data already saved to the internal memory of the device
   • Replace will erase the data that was already saved to the internal memory of the device and overwrite it with the data from the card

At this point, the data is now copied to the device.
