How to Improve Distance Tracking on Indoor Activities
If the distance recorded during indoor runs or walks is not accurate, here are some tips for best results.
Record a few runs or walks outside with GPS.
Make sure you get the GPS ready indicator before starting the timer on your calibration activity.
Choose a location without trees or tall buildings for the best GPS signal.
The calibration activity should be recorded at similar pace to your regular pace and should be at least 1 mile in length.
If your pace is slower than 27 minutes per mile or 1 meter per second or the cadence is less than 80 full steps per minute the device may not be able to generate enough data for a proper calibration.
Ensure you have the correct values set in the User Profile of the device. For details see, Changing Device and User Settings in Garmin Connect.
Calibrate the watch by performing a Treadmill activity. The watch must record a distance of at least 1 mile (for older models) or 1.5 miles (for newer models) before it will give the "Save and Calibrate" option. For more details, see your owner's manual.
NOTE: Some older watches do not have the option to calibrate via treadmill. In these cases, run at least 1 mile outdoors with GPS enabled to complete a calibration.
Your arm should be allowed to swing naturally during the calibration activity. Do not hold the handrails of the treadmill.
Use an additional sensor like a foot pod, HRM-Pro™ Plus, HRM-Fit™ or HRM 600 heart rate monitor. To see if your watch supports wireless sensors, refer to your owner's manual.
