Getting the Most Out of Solar Charging With a Solar Capable Watch

Solar charging is made possible by a layer of solar cells that are bonded between the lens and the display of the smartwatch. The solar panel is see-through and stretches across the entirety of the watch face display, giving you that extra boost of charge if needed. To achieve the best solar charge with a solar watch, ensure you are following the tips below.

NOTE: Solar charging is designed to extend your time between charges. It is not designed to be used as the primary charging source.

Tips for Achieving the Best Solar Charge

  • Have the lens or screen face directly towards the sun.

  • Avoid covering the lens or screen with clothing.

  • Wear the watch so the lens is on the outside of your wrist.

What Impacts Solar Charging?

The list of examples below is not all-encompassing. In general, anything that may limit the sunlight from reaching your watch lens or screen will affect solar charging. Some examples below are things that will be out of your control, but will affect the solar charging. Some have minor effects, while others have a greater impact.

  • Position of the sun, including time of day and current season.

    • The farther you are from the equator, the more the season will impact the amount of solar intensity you see.

  • Weather, including clouds, rain, and other weather patterns that may block or obscure the sun.

  • Exceeding solar charging temperature thresholds, from 0 to 60°C (from 32 to 140°F).

  • Attempting to charge from light sources other than the sun.

    • Solar watches are optimized for sunlight and may not charge well from other light sources.

  • Attempting to charge through glass, water, or other translucent materials.

    • Translucent materials can scatter or dim solar intensity and may decrease the amount of solar charging.

  • Whether the watch is powered on or off.

    • Solar charging can take place regardless of the watch being on or off, but solar charging while the watch is off can yield greater impact since the watch is not using much power while off.
