What is the Acute and Chronic Load Feature of My Garmin Device?
What is Acute Training Load?
Acute load is a weighted sum of your excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) for the last several days. It helps to quantify your activities and the amount of strain placed on your body. The gauge indicates whether your current load is low, optimal, high, or very high. The optimal range is based on your individual fitness level and training history. The range adjusts as your training time and intensity increase or decrease.
Being able to see the load from all of your activities in one place can help make sure you are active enough and challenging yourself. Acute load will measure the combined stress on your body from your activities over the last seven days and assign a numeric score based on your Exercise Load scores, and status of your current load.
NOTE: Acute load is formulaically a weighted sum of all training from the past week. It is not possible to arrive at the value simply by adding the load measurement in your recent activities.

What is Chronic Training Load?
Chronic training load provides longer term information on your training load history over the past 28 days. You are also provided with the Acute: Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR). This information can indicate when you are in a well-prepared state, or at an increased risk of injury. To determine your load ratio, simply divide your acute training load over your chronic training load. Monitoring your acute vs chronic training load over time helps you to assess whether increases in training load are introduced safely and effectively.
Where Can I See My Acute and Chronic Training Load?
Acute and chronic training load information is available to view on your watch in the Training Status widget glance. To learn how to add widget glances search “Customizing the Glance Loop” in your owner's manual.
