The Floors Climbed Feature Is Not Accurate on My Watch

This feature uses the built in barometric altimeter sensor to detect a change in air pressure which occurs when you climb or descend a flight of stairs or a hill.

How Do I Get Credit?

Credit is given for a consecutive increase of 10 feet (3 meters) in elevation with a grade of 10% or higher while walking or running. This includes during a recorded activity, whether indoor or outdoor.

I'm Not Getting Enough Credit

Holding onto a handrail or skipping stairs as you climb can affect credit due a reduced amount of swing in your arm. To earn credit, you must be moving forward and up which would exclude riding an elevator or using exercise equipment.

I'm Getting Too Much Credit

Situations that can cause excessive credit include a significant change in pressure such as a strong pressure system or walking into a warm building on a cold day. Walking near exit doors when it is cold outside may also trigger extra credit. Walking outside on a windy day with the watch exposed to the wind can also result in false credit.

Clean the Barometer Port on the Device

If the small portholes on the back or side of the watch are obstructed, it may interfere with the ability for the watch to measure elevation properly. To clean the sensor, locate the port on the back or side of the watch. You can rinse the port with water or you can also soak the watch in water for 5 minutes, agitating it every minute to help breakdown and remove any debris, such as sweat crystals or skin cells. After cleaning and/or soaking, allow the watch to dry completely.

IMPORTANT: Do not stick anything into the holes or use canned air as this can result in damage to the sensor.

Calibrate the Barometric Altimeter

This occurs automatically when you follow these steps:

NOTE: This does not apply to devices that use Connected GPS.

  1. While outdoors, select an outdoor activity profile.

  2. Allow the watch to acquire a GPS signal.

  3. Wait an additional 30 seconds after acquiring a signal before starting or exiting the activity. No message will appear but allowing the extra time will complete the calibration process.
