What is Virtual Speed?
Virtual speed is displayed while riding in training applications such as the Tacx Training™ app while using a compatible smart trainer.
How is Virtual Speed Calculated?
Virtual speed is calculated based on multiple factors and can vary depending on the specific training application used. Factors can include the following:
Power
Road gradient
Rider height and weight
The actual speed of your rear wheel or smart trainer is not factored into the virtual speed calculation. The specific gear ratio of your bike will not influence your virtual speed, nor will the Trainer Difficulty Modifier in the Tacx Training app.
Why Does My Garmin Device Report a Different Speed and Distance?
A Garmin® watch or Edge® cycling computer calculates speed and distance based on the actual wheel rotations during your trainer ride. It does not consider power, grade, or any other factors of virtual speed. Wheel size and gear ratio will have a direct impact on the speed displayed on your device. This may result in the speed and distance recorded by your watch or cycling computer to be different than the virtual speed and distance in the app, especially when riding in ERG mode or using Virtual Shifting.
Setting a virtual wheel size for your smart trainer can increase the accuracy of the speed and distance recorded by your Edge or watch while riding in grade or slope mode. This setting can be found in the Sensor Details menu while your trainer is connected to your device. Refer to your owner's manual for details.
