(2009) Service Advisory 0906 Rev A: GPS 400W/GNC 420W, GNS 430W, GPS 500W, and GNS 530W Unit Connection to Honeywell EFS 40/50 Systems with SG 465 Symbol Generator Software Modification 15/01

AFFECTED PRODUCTS

All models of the GNS 400W/500W series connected to Bendix/King EFS 40/50 systems.

DESCRIPTION

The advent of WAAS capability with GNS 400W/500W Series Units created a compatibility problem with Honeywell EFS 40/50 Systems, as these systems were not able to correctly display WAAS Vertical Deviation. Garmin compensated for this by the addition of the “GAMA 429 Bendix/King” output format, which became available with the 400W/500W software version 3.00 upgrade.

On December 19 2008, Honeywell announced the availability of Symbol Generator Software (SW) Modification (MOD) 15/01 to the SG 465 EFS Symbol Generator. This software upgrade enabled the Honeywell EFS 40/50 System to correctly display WAAS Vertical Deviation. Operators that have this upgrade performed on their system will require the GPS ARINC 429 output to be set to “GAMA 429” on their 400W/500W unit. The “GAMA 429 Bendix/King” output setting should only be used on EFS 40/50 Systems that do not have Symbol Generator Software (SW) Modification (MOD) 15/01 or any other software version that correctly utilizes GAMA 429 for WAAS vertical deviation.

RESOLUTION

Installation Bulletin 0903 provided proper configuration information for a 400W/500W Series Unit that is installed with a Honeywell (Bendix/King) EFS 40/50 System having SG 465 Symbol Generator Software Modification 15/01.

This Service Advisory is to inform 400W/500W users of the following operational changes that will appear after the configuration change described in Installation Bulletin 0903 has been performed:

After compliance with Installation Bulletin 0903, the EFS 40/50 will no longer provide selected course to the 400W/500W. As such, if the user enters OBS mode on the 400W/500W, the OBS course to the active waypoint must now be selected using the pop-up OBS Course window on the 400W/500W rather than the course selection knob on the EFIS control panel.

Changes to the EFIS operation would appear in the EFS 40/50 documentation, provided by Honeywell.
