How Do the NEO 2/2T and NEO Bike Series Trainers Measure Cadence?
The NEO 2, NEO 2T, and NEO Bike Series Smart Trainers all use an internal sensor to measure cadence as the crank arm passes by the sensor located on the non-drive side of the trainer.
Why Is My NEO 2/2T Not Measuring Cadence?
The NEO 2 and NEO 2T are both equipped with a contactless, capacitive sensor that is used to measure your cadence (RPM). This also enables the unique pedal stroke analysis features within the Tacx Desktop app (on Windows).
While you are cycling, the crank end passes by the sensor, measuring your cadence. However, not every bike has the same crank position and this can prevent the crank end from passing over the sensor as shown in the first image below.
What Can I Do if My Crank End Does Not Pass Over the Sensor?
This can be resolved by adding a metal plate on the crank side that passes over the sensor. It is also possible to use an external cadence sensor, such as the Cadence Sensor 2, but you will not be able to use the pedal stroke analysis features with an external sensor.
How Do I Install the Metal Plate?
Turn your bike upside down. This makes it easier to reach the crank location.
Add the small rubber piece between your crank and the metal plate to avoid any scratches (see the blue arrow in the image below). The metal plate is placed over the rubber piece facing outwards. Only one plate needs to be added, but make sure to add this on the non-drive side (the LED light side on the trainer).
Once you have found a proper location for the metal plate, use the elastic ring to lock it in place.
Be sure to check the distance between the metal plate and your frame. Avoid placing the metal plate too far out as this can cause it to hit the frame of the bike or trainer.
Once the metal plate has been installed, the contactless capacitive sensor will be able to measure cadence effectively.
