How Are Elevation Readings Calculated for My Activity in Garmin Connect?
Elevation information from a recorded activity will provide two different types of data in your Garmin Connect™ account.
Elevation Graph: A graphical plot indicating the elevation reading at any given moment during the activity
Elevation Numbers: Readings that indicate gain, loss, as well as your minimum and maximum elevation during the activity.
Where Does the Elevation Information Come From?
Where this information comes from will depend on the type of device you have:
Devices Which Feature a Barometric Altimeter Sensor
The device will measure changes in air pressure to determine your elevation. This information is recorded during your activity and is used to report elevation related information in Garmin Connect.
Devices Without a Barometric Altimeter
Devices will rely upon Garmin Connect to provide elevation information. The GPS data gathered from your activity is calculated using professional surveys which contains elevation plots throughout the area you recorded your activity. This allows Garmin Connect to give you an estimated elevation reading for the activity that you recorded.
Why Am I Not Seeing Elevation Information in My Activity?
The most common reason why you would not see elevation information in your recorded activity is one of the following:
You did not record GPS data during your activity
You have a device that does not feature a built-in GPS antenna.
