What is Advanced Sleep Monitoring in Garmin Connect?

Advanced Sleep Monitoring (ASM), available on watches with optical heart rate sensors, allows users to track sleep statistics in Garmin Connect by wearing the watch while sleeping.

Select models can also provide sleep score and insights. For information see: What is the Sleep Score and Insights Feature on My Garmin Watch?.

NOTE: Only smartwatches with nap tracking add naps to your sleep statistics. Do Not Disturb mode can silence naptime alerts (excluding alarms); check your manual for setup. Any sleep over three hours initiates new sleep statistic tracking.

Which Watches Support Advanced Sleep Monitoring?

For information about which watches support this feature, see - Advanced Sleep Monitoring Watch Compatibility.

What Information Is Recorded With Advanced Sleep Monitoring?

Garmin watches record extensive sleep data. Feature availability varies by watch model and may require software updates. If a feature mentioned in your owner's manual is missing, ensure your watch has the latest software.

Sleep Stages

  • Light Sleep: Eye movements and muscle activity begin to slow down as the body prepares for deep sleep.

  • Deep Sleep: Eye and muscle movements stop completely. Heart rate and breathing slow down. This stage can be referred to as restoration mode, where the body will recover, building bone and muscle, and boosting your immune system.

  • REM Sleep: Also referred to as the dream stage, brain activity is almost as active as when you are awake. REM sleep is important for forming memories and processing information.

The chart below is an example of how sleep stages, including awake times, will look in Garmin Connect.

Pulse Ox

Pulse Oximetry (Pulse Ox) is a non-invasive method used to measure the saturation of oxygen in the bloodstream. Refer to your owner's manual to determine if your watch has this feature during sleep.

Respiration

This feature will display how many breaths you are taking per minute. Refer to your owner's manual to determine if your watch has this feature.

Breathing Variations

This feature will give you information about any variations in your breathing during sleep, and how often they occur. Refer to What Are Breathing Variations? for more information and a list of compatible devices.

Restlessness

This feature indicates sudden movement, typically detected in light sleep.

How Does This Feature Work?

The watch's optical heart rate sensor measures heart rate and HRV (time between heartbeats). Combined with accelerometer data, these metrics determine when you sleep, wake, and your sleep stages. Learn more about sleep tracking on our Garmin Technology page.

Advance Sleep Monitoring Requirements

Requirements to get advanced sleep monitoring include the following:

    Gaps in Overnight HRV Data

Overnight gaps in HRV data, despite complete heart rate readings, occur because HRV has stricter quality requirements. These gaps can result from poor sensor readings due to factors like sleeping position, a loose band, obstructed blood flow, or watch movement. A snug fit and minimizing sleep movement can help.
