Preparing a micro/SD Card to Register Marine Devices in Garmin Express™

Note: It is not necessary to prepare a micro/SD card for marine handheld devices, including the GPSMAP® 78, GPSMAP® 86, Colorado, Oregon, and Dakota series. These devices can be directly connected to a computer for use with Garmin Express™. See Registering Garmin Marine Devices and Charts for more information.

Garmin Express can be used to register Garmin® marine chartplotters and devices connected to them via the NMEA 2000 or Garmin Marine Networks. A micro/SD card must be prepared in the chartplotter for this process.

If necessary, see Formatting a Micro/SD Card for a Marine Device for steps to format the SD card prior to preparing it. It is not typically necessary to format brand-new cards.

To prepare a micro/SD card:

    1. Make sure that networked devices (such as radar, sonar modules, SiriusXM and GPS antennae) are powered and connected to the chartplotter
    2. Turn the chartplotter off
    3. Insert the SD card
    4. Turn the chartplotter on
    5. When the warning screen appears, select I Agree

At this point, the chartplotter will place a file on the micro/SD card that allows Garmin Express to recognize all marine devices connected to the NMEA 2000 and Garmin Marine Network, such as model and serial numbers. Insert the card into the computer and follow the steps in Registering Garmin Marine Devices and Charts to register the device.

If Garmin Express does not recognize the SD card or device, verify that the file has been written to the card.

Verifying files on the micro/SD card

To verify that the card is prepared:

    1. Insert the micro/SD card into an SD card slot or reader
      • If using an external card reader, plug the card reader into the computer
    2. Locate the associated drive for the card reader connected
      • This usually appears as a Removable Disk
    3. Open the drive to view its contents
    4. Locate the Garmin folder
    5. Open the Garmin folder to view the contents

If the card has been prepared appropriately, a GarminDevice.xml file will appear in the Garmin folder. Once this file has been located, see Registering a Garmin Marine Device for steps to register the device(s) and download charts.
