Using Garmin Voice Command on Your Watch

On select Garmin® watches, Voice Command can be activated by holding START (upper-right button), but this shortcut can be customized to a different button through your settings. You can also access the Voice Command from the Controls or Apps Menus on your watch. When active, the screen of the watch will show a microphone with the word “Listening” meaning that the watch is listening for key phrases for actions you can perform. Garmin does not record or store your voice for any reason while using Voice Command.

Where Can I Find the Complete List of Command Phrases?

There are a variety of phrases you can use to access functions of the watch such as starting a specific activity type, checking the weather, or setting an alarm. Select your watch below to get a list of the key phrases that can be used on your watch. You can also ask the watch "What can I say?" for suggestions.

Compatible Watches

This feature is only supported on the following models:

How is Voice Command Different from Phone Assistant?

The Voice Command and Phone Voice Assistant functions on your watch are similar, but the Voice Command relates to functions on the watch itself, whereas Phone Assistant is connected to your smartphone. If you want to use a function of your watch, like viewing a widget glance or starting an activity, use the Voice Command. If you want to access functions of your smartphone, such as placing a call or sending a text message, you will need to use the Phone Assistant function.

Some actions can have overlapping key phrases, for example you can start a timer using either Voice Command or Phone Assistant. If you use Voice Command to start the timer, the watch will run it. If you use the Phone Assistant via the watch to start the timer, the timer will start on your phone. To learn more about Phone Voice Assistant, see Setting Up Voice Assistant on Your Garmin Watch.

Tips for Using Voice Command

The video below walks through how to use the Voice Command and Voice Notes features on your watch. Below the video are some tips for using the feature to get the most out of it.

  • Speak in a normal voice directly at the watch.

  • Use phrases the watch can recognize, see the list in your owner’s manual under the Voice Command section, or ask "What can I say?".

  • Limit background noise. If you are in a loud area, such as a store, sporting event, or any area where there are other people talking, the watch may have difficulty registering your voice commands.

  • Press the BACK (lower-right button) to exit Voice Command.

  • Confirm your Voice Command is set to the correct language and dialect. See the steps below in My Watch Is in the Wrong Language.

  • If Voice Command is not working properly on your device, see Voice Command Is Not Working.

Troubleshooting

My Watch Is in the Wrong Language

If your Voice Command is not recognizing what you are saying, the Voice Command might be set to the wrong language. If your written menu options are not in your preferred language, search your owner’s manual for “Language” to get steps to set the watch to your preferred language.

If your watch language is correct, but the Voice Command is set to a different dialect from what you are speaking, it can cause the watch to fail to understand you. Search your owner’s manual for “Voice Command” for instructions on how to change the dialect input settings. The Voice Command language can be different from the watch language.

Available Voice Command dialects currently include:

  • Danish

  • Dutch

  • English - Australian (AU)

  • English - United Kingdom (UK)

  • English - United States (US)

  • French - Canadian (CN)

  • French - France (FR)

  • German

  • Italian

  • Japanese

  • Korean

  • Mandarin

  • Spanish - North American (AM)

  • Spanish - Spain (ES)

  • Swedish

  • Taiwanese

  • Thai

Voice Command Is Not Working

If you have confirmed the language settings on your watch, but the Voice Command is still not functioning, there are some additional steps you can take.

  • Check that the Voice Command is activated by looking for the microphone icon with the word "Listening" on the screen.

  • Make sure you are using a phrase the watch can recognize. See the list in your owner’s manual for recognized phrases.

  • Try a different command to make sure the microphone is functioning.

  • If you are in a loud environment with other people talking, move to a quieter location to make sure the watch can distinguish your voice.

  • Clean your watch. A blocked or partially blocked microphone can impact what the watch can detect. Follow the instructions in our wear and care tips for how to clean your watch.

  • Make sure that your watch has fully dried after submersing in water or cleaning. Water lingering in ports can impact microphone and speaker performance.

  • Reboot your watch.

  • Confirm your watch software is up to date. Search here for steps on updating your software.
