Getting Started With Strength Training on a Garmin Watch

The Strength activity profile lets you record the number of reps and sets, as well as being able to track the type of exercise performed. You can also enter the weight used for the exercise. After completing a set, strength activities feature rest periods to allow you to get ready for the next activity. 

The Strength profile can be useful for tracking the following:

  • Counting movement repetitions (reps).

  • Keeping track of how many sets you have performed.

  • What muscle groups were worked (when viewed in the Garmin Connect™ account).

  • Type of exercises performed.

  • Viewing Work Time and Rest Time totals.

Your watch's owner's manual will contain steps for using the Strength activity.  Select an option below to reveal additional details about options within the strength activity profile.


Workouts

Workouts are step-by-step instructions that can help give your Strength activity structure and guidance. You can create and find workouts using the Garmin Connect™ platform.

Skipping a Group

If you have started a workout and need to skip a step in a workout, you can skip the group and come back to it later. Not all Garmin watches support this feature.

Non-Touchscreen Devices:

NOTE: Some touchscreen devices will use these steps.

  1. Start a Strength workout.

  2. Press START/STOP (top right button).

  3. Select Skip Group.

Touchscreen Devices:

  1. With the Strength workout started, swipe through to the last data screen.

  2. Select the 3 dots at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Select Skip Group.


Adding a Skipped Group

If you have skipped a workout group and want to add it back, walk through the steps below. Not all Garmin watches support this feature.

Non-Touchscreen Devices:

NOTE: Some touchscreen devices will use these steps.

  1. Press START/STOP (top right button).

  2. Select View Skipped.

  3. Select a skipped group.

  4. Select Add to Workout.

Touchscreen Devices:

  1. With the Strength workout started, swipe through to the last data screen.

  2. Select the 3 dots at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Select View Skipped.

  4. Locate the Group you want to add back.

  5. Swipe the screen from right to left.

  6. Select thePlus Sign Venu 2 Plus Icon Plus sign

  7. Group Added.

The skipped group will be added as the next group in your workout. For additional information on how to use workouts with your specific watch, refer to your owner's manual.



Tips For Recording Strength Training Activities


Viewing a Strength Activity in Garmin Connect

After you have synced the activity to your Garmin Connect account, you can view the details of your strength activity. You will see an overview of the entire activity and can see all muscle groups worked, sets, and heart rate data. Garmin Connect will assign an exercise name to each set when able, but each set and exercise type is available to edit. The primary, secondary, and untargeted muscles for the entire activity will show depending on the types of muscles used.

Garmin Connect App

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Activities.

  4. Select All Activities or Gym & Fitness Equipment.

  5. Select the activity that you wish to see the details of.

The activity will display an overview of the entire activity, including total time, all muscle groups worked, exercises performed, and calories burned.

You can tap the muscle groups image to get a more detailed view, including which muscle groups were used in each set.

Additional information includes exercise names and sets, time in the set, reps, weight, and the ability to edit or add exercises that you performed.


Garmin Connect Web

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Activities from the navigation bar on the left.

  3. Select All Activities.

  4. Select the title of the activity you wish to see the details of.

    • You can also select the Gray Barbell icon in the filter bar to select only gym activities.

The activity will display an overview of the entire activity, including total time, all muscle groups worked, exercises performed, and calories burned. Additional information includes exercise names and sets, time in the set, rest time, and reps. To add exercises, edit the sets or other details of your activity, select the Gray Pencil Edit Icon icon in the upper-right corner.



What Exercises Are Available?

The list of exercises available to add into your Strength activity are continuously growing. To view the ones currently available, follow the steps below:


Garmin Connect App

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Select More (bottom right). 

  3. Select Activities.

  4. Select All Activities.

  5. Select one of your Strength activities.

  6. Select Add Exercise +.

Search or Swipe Up through the alphabetized list of available exercises.


Garmin Connect Web

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select All Activities.

  3. Select one of your Strength activities.

  4. Select Choose an Exercise.

Search or scroll through the alphabetized list of available exercises.
