inReach SE or Explorer is Frozen, Will Not Power On, or Is Not Working Correctly

If an inReach SE® or inReach Explorer® handheld exhibits an issue acquiring a GPS fix, pairing to a companion Android or iOS device, charging, or powering on, use the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the issue.


Soft Reset

  1. Power off the inReach® handheld and disconnect it from any power source.
  2. Press and hold both the X button and the Down button of the directional pad simultaneously for 60 seconds.

  3. Release the X button and Down button and power the device on normally.
  4. Sync the inReach handheld with inReach Sync. For steps, see - Updating inReach Firmware and Syncing Account Changes with inReach Sync.
  5. Test the inReach handheld to confirm the issue has been resolved.

Power Connected-Soft Reset (If Device Will Not Power On)

  1. Connect the inReach® handheld to any power source.
  2. Press and hold the X button and the Down button of the directional pad simultaneously for 60 seconds.

  3. Release the X button and Down button.
  4. Disconnect from power cable.
  5. Power the inReach handheld on normally.
  6. Sync the inReach handheld with inReach Sync. For steps, see - Updating inReach Firmware and Syncing Account Changes with inReach Sync.
  7. Test the inReach handheld to confirm the issue has been resolved.

Manual Firmware Update

  1. Power off the inReach® handheld and disconnect it from any power source.
  2. Press and hold down the XCheck, and Down buttons on the directional pad simultaneously.

  3. The inReach handheld will power on into Firmware Update Mode.

  4. Connect the inReach handheld to your computer and sync with inReach Sync. For steps, see - Updating inReach Firmware and Syncing Account Changes with inReach Sync.
  5. Test the inReach handheld to confirm the issue has been resolved.
