Frequently Asked Questions About Garmin Connect Groups

Your Garmin Connect™ account offers a Group feature to help you coordinate group activities in one convenient place. On your group's page you can post announcements, add courses, and view activities from other group members. Groups are also perfect for those training for their first 5K or trying to set a personal record at a local half marathon. Below you will find the answers to some frequently asked questions about Garmin Connect Groups.

Who Can Create a Group?

Any Garmin Connect user can create a group. However, if your existing group has a coach or leader, that person is generally the best one to create the group.


How Do I Create a Group?

NOTE: If you will be adding courses to your group, make sure that you choose at least one outdoor activity when answering "What does your group do?".

To create a group, you will need to use Garmin Connect web.


Garmin Connect Web Instructions

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Groups from the navigation bar on the left.

  3. Select + Create a Group on the right side of the page.

  4. Fill out your group details.

  5. Select Save.


What Is the Difference Between a Group Owner and a Group Administrator?

Each group can have only one owner. Usually, the owner is the person who first creates the group; however, ownership can be transferred if the group creator wants to pass on the responsibility. The owner is the only person who can delete a group.

Groups can have multiple administrators, assigned either by the owner or an existing administrator. Administrators can add courses, notifications, and other information to the group page. They can approve membership requests and grant other members admin rights, too.


How Do I Grant Admin Rights, Remove Admin Rights, or Remove a User From a Group?

A group owner or group administrator can remove or grant admin rights to other users, or remove users from a group. Select your preferred platform below to reveal instructions.

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Groups.

  4. Select the group.

  5. Select Members.

  6. Select a member.

  7. Select Admin to grant admin permissions, select Member to remove admin permissions, or select Remove from Group to remove the user.

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Groups from the navigation bar on the left.

  3. Select the group.

  4. Select Members.

  5. Select the cog icon Cog iconnext to the member's name to reveal a drop-down menu.

  6. Select the appropriate action.


How Do I Transfer Ownership of a Group?

Only a group owner can transfer ownership. Once ownership has been transferred, it cannot be undone. Select your preferred platform below to reveal instructions.

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Groups.

  4. Select the group that you wish to transfer ownership of.

  5. Select Three dots stacked on each other from the top right.

  6. Select Transfer Ownership.

  7. Select Continue.

  8. Select the member you wish to transfer ownership to.

  9. Select Continue.

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Groups from the navigation bar on the left.

  3. Select the group that you wish to transfer ownership of.

  4. Select Members.

  5. Select the cog icon Cog icon next to the member's name that you want to transfer ownership to.

  6. Select Transfer Ownership.

  7. Select Yes, I'm Sure.

Why Are My Activities Not Showing up in My Group?

When you join a group or start making connections, be sure to adjust your activity and profile privacy settings. If all your activities are set to private, they will not show up anywhere.

How Do I Edit Group Settings?

If you are a group owner or group admin, you can edit group settings in Garmin Connect. Settings that can be edited include changing the group name, who can see your group, how people join, what stats display in leaderboards, what activities display in the activity feed, and more. If you need to change the group's photo, you must use Garmin Connect web. Select your preferred platform below to reveal instructions.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Groups.

  4. Select the group that you wish to edit.

  5. Select Three dots stacked on each other from the top right.

  6. Select Admin Settings.

  7. Make the desired edits. 

  8. Select Save (top right).

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Groups from the navigation bar on the left.

  3. Select the name of the group that you wish to edit.

  4. Select Three dots stacked on each other on the right side of the page.

  5. Select Settings.

  6. Make the desired edits to the group.

  7. Select Save.


Who Can See What Is Posted on My Group Page?

Group administrators or owners can adjust the privacy of a group to best fit the group's needs. Use the group settings to select who can see the group: Everyone or Only Group Members. Selecting "Everyone" will make it so that the other users outside the group can search for the group in Garmin Connect and view the activity feed, members, calendars, and courses for the group. Selecting "Only Group Members" will make it so that other users outside the group will not be able to locate it by searching for the group in Garmin Connect and users outside the group will not be able to view the activity feed, members, calendars, or courses for the group.


Who Can See My Group Comments?

Comments you make in a group stay in the group. Only fellow group members can see comments made.


How Do I Invite a User to a Join a Group?

Group members can invite other users to join a group using Garmin Connect web.

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Groups from the navigation bar on the left.

  3. Select the name of the group you wish to invite someone to.

  4. Select Three dots stacked on each other on the right side of the page.

  5. Select Invite.

  6. Search for a user using the search tool.

  7. Select + Invite below the user's name.


How Do I Accept an Invitation to Join a Group?

To accept a group invitation, you will need to use Garmin Connect web.

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Requests & NotificationsInbox tray icon with blue dot in upper right corner.

  3. Find the notification about the invitation.

How Do I Join a Group?

If you have received an invitation to join the group, you can follow the steps above to accept the invitation and join the group. If you have not received an invitation to join a group, you can search for a group to join.

NOTE: Depending on the group's privacy settings, not all groups can be found through a search. Some groups can only be joined by invitation only. If you cannot find a group or do not have the option to join it, reach out to a member of the group for assistance.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Groups.

  4. Select the magnifying glass in the top right to search for a group.

  5. Search for the group by name or keywords.

  6. Select Join next to the group you wish to join.

    • If group administrator approval is required, acknowledge this and select Request


Garmin Connect Web Instructions

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Groups from the navigation bar on the left.

  3. Select Find Groups.

  4. Search for the group by name or keywords.

  5. Select Request to Join Group or Join Group below the group you wish to join. If group administrator approval is required, to become a group member your request must be approved first. 

  6. Acknowledge the data and privacy message by selecting Ok.


How Do I Leave a Group?

You can leave a group at any time. Select your preferred platform below to reveal instructions.

NOTE: If you are the owner of a group you will need to transfer ownership to another member before you can leave the group.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Groups.

  4. Select the group you wish to leave.

  5. Select Three dots stacked on each other from the top right.

  6. Select Leave Group.
