Advantages of Switching to an Enabled Plan vs. Canceling inReach Service
For existing inReach® subscriptions, there may be times when most (or all) inReach satellite communication features are not needed. In these instances, the subscription can be switched to an Enabled plan or it can be canceled. Switching to the Enabled plan may be the more beneficial of these two options in some cases, but there are still advantages for each.
Reasons for Switching to an Enabled Plan
The Enabled plan includes unlimited SOS and messaging with the Garmin Response™ team, but pay-as-you-go pricing for other features. This provides a way of keeping the inReach device active and ready for use in an emergency situation at a low monthly cost. If you start to change your subscription, an Enabled state of operation will be presented along with pricing information based on your region.
When choosing to switch to an Enabled a plan, there are some important things to consider:
There is no activation fee if you choose to change back to a higher plan later.
Additional charges apply to sending, receiving, and reacting to messages (outside of using SOS).
Additional charges apply to sending tracking points.
Additional charges apply to weather forecasts.
For details on how to change your inReach subscription, see Related.
Reasons for Canceling
Canceling your inReach subscription should be reserved for these situations:
The inReach device is being sold or given away.
You do not anticipate needing to use the device at all for an extended period of time.
For example, if there are only two or three consecutive months during the year when you need access to inReach satellite communication features, it will typically be more cost effective to cancel your service and reactivate it again the following year rather than switching to an Enabled plan during the off months.
When choosing to cancel a plan, there are some important things to consider:
If you choose to cancel service and then choose to activate again later, you will be assessed another activation fee.
Canceling puts the device in a "deactivated" state where it no longer functions on the Iridium Network1
Any account data may be removed if there is no activity on your Garmin account across all our sites and services for at least 2 years . For more details, see - Inactive Account Deletion.

1 SOS, messaging, location requests, inReach weather, and MapShare tracking will not function without access to the Iridium Network.
