Frequency Range for the FRS and GMRS Channels on Rino Devices

Rino® 2-way radios have the ability to operate on both FRS and GMRS frequency ranges, though an FCC permit is required to utilize the GMRS frequencies.

The frequency range for Channels 1-22R on the Rino series devices covers 462.5625 ~ 467.7250. These channels utilize squelch codes to block unwanted transmissions:

  • CTCSS squelch codes, available for all the Rino series devices, broadcasts a low-pitch audio tone (on the channels/frequencies listed above) within the range of 67 ~ 250.3 Hz

  • DCS squelch codes, available only on the Rino 600 and 700 series devices, send a digital data stream (on the channel/frequencies listed above)

To ensure communication occurs without error, confirm all radios are utilizing the same channel and squelch code system (CTCSS/DCS).

Utilize CTCSS on the Rino 600 or 700 series devices when working with legacy Rino products as this is their only squelch code option.

For line-of-sight distance range, check your Rino device owner's manual or specs page with the steps below.

GMRS Rules and Regulations

The Rino® 2-way radio operates on General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) frequencies regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. Operation on the GMRS frequencies is subject to rules as specified in 47 C.F.R. Part 95. In order to transmit on GMRS frequencies, you are required to obtain a license from the FCC.

You can obtain a license from the FCC by registering and applying online through their Universal Licensing System. For instructions, refer to the following FCC support articles:

For more information on GMRS, FCC forms, and fees, go to the FCC web page at www.fcc.gov/general-mobile-radio-service-gmrs.

No license is required to operate on GMRS channels in Canada; however, GMRS repeater channels are not approved for use by the Canadian government.  GMRS repeater locations in the US can be determined with an internet search.

For use in countries outside of the United States and Canada, check with that government for any restrictions of GMRS use.

Using Third-Party Radios With a Rino Outdoor Handheld

NOTE: The Tread series use MURS frequencies and will not work with Rino 2-way radios or other third-party radios.

To communicate with other Rino radios and GMRS, GMRS/FRS, or UHF CBRS/PRS radio users, you must be on the same channel and squelch code.

Rino devices are compatible with third-party radios as long as the radios use standard frequencies. For a list of all frequencies used by your device, see the devices owner's manual.
