Transferring User Data to Chartplotters Incompatible with the ActiveCaptain App

Even Garmin chartplotters incompatible with the ActiveCaptain® app can utilize data created in the ActiveCaptain® app, such as routes and waypoints, as long as the chartplotter has an SD card port. The following steps outline how to create, export, copy, and transfer ActiveCaptain® user data from the app to the chartplotter.


Creating user data in ActiveCaptain® app

  1. Download ActiveCaptain® app on a compatible smart device

  2. Open the app and sign into a Garmin account

  3. Select Charts

  4. Select ☰ 

  5. Select Download Charts

  6. Select the chart to be downloaded

  7. Select the desired tiles and allow them to download

  8. Select Charts

  9. Routes and waypoints can now be created

NOTE: Waypoints can be created without downloaded charts

Exporting user data from ActiveCaptain® app 

  1. Select ☰ 

  2. Select User Data

  3. Select  ⋮ 

  4. Select Export to GPX File

  5. Select an app to send the file to so it may be downloaded on a computer (email is recommended)

Copying user data to a micro/SD card

  1. Download the GPX file to a computer

  2. Insert a micro/SD card into the computer

  3. Create a folder called Garmin on the root directory of the micro/SD card

  4. Open the Garmin folder and create another folder called GPX

  5. Place the GPX file that was downloaded into the GPX folder and remove the card from the computer

NOTE:  The micro/SD card should be no smaller than 4gb and no larger than 1TB*, and must be formatted to FAT 32 (Windows) or MS DOS FAT (Mac)

Transferring user data to a chartplotter

  1. Turn on the chartplotter

  2. Insert the micro/SD card

  3. Select Nav Info

  4. Select Manage Data

  5. Select Data Transfer

  6. If multiple cards are inserted, select the card to copy data from

  7. Select an option:

    • Select Merge from Card to add the data to the chartplotter's existing data

    • Select Replace from Card to delete the chartplotter's data before adding that of the card

  8. Select the file to be transferred

  9. Set File Type to GPX

  10. Select Continue

  11. The data will now appear on the chartplotter

*Not all devices will be compatible with the new exFAT file system. Refer to New exFAT support on Garmin Marine Devices
