Changing an inReach Subscription Plan

An inReach® satellite communication subscription plan allows users to move up and down a tier within the current plan type, or change to a different plan type. Moving up or down plan tiers can change the number of included messages per month, the number of track points able to be sent, location requests, or available tracking intervals. 

Changing inReach subscription plans may incur additional charges, but your bill date will remain the same. Review the plan type before making changes.

Important Things to Consider Before Changing Your Plan

As of September 18th, 2024, inReach Freedom and inReach Annual Contract subscription plans are no longer available. Review the section below that best describes your situation.

Current Freedom or Annual Plan Subscribers

Existing Freedom plan subscribers can still move up or down within Freedom plan tiers. Existing Annual plan subscribers are no longer able to move up or down within the old Annual plan tiers. If you currently have an inReach Freedom or inReach Annual Contract subscription plan and choose to change to one of the newer inReach Consumer plans, you will not be able to change back to an inReach Freedom or inReach Annual Contract plan. Upgrading or Downgrading a Freedom Plan

When a Freedom subscription is upgraded within the old plan tiers the plan change is effective immediately and the remaining prepayment is pro-rated based from the renewal to the date the upgrade will take effect and any message overage will also be due. The difference of the pro-rated amount and the new service plan will be charged to the account. When a Freedom subscription plan is downgraded within the old plan tiers it takes place at the end of the current billing cycle.

Changing from Freedom Plans to Newer inReach Consumer Plans

There is no Annual Program Fee or activation fee when switching to a new inReach Consumer plan. The plan change is effective immediately for all plan types (Enabled, Essential, Standard, and Premium) and the remaining prepayment is pro-rated based from the renewal to the date the upgrade will take effect and any message overage will also be due. The difference of the pro-rated amount and the new service plan will be charged to the account.

Changing from Annual Contract Plans to Newer inReach Consumer Plans

There is no activation fee when changing to a new inReach Consumer plan and no early termination fee if the change is made before the end of the annual contract. The plan change is effective immediately for all plan types (Enabled, Essential, Standard, and Premium) and the remaining prepayment is pro-rated based from the renewal to the date the upgrade will take effect and any message overage will also be due. The difference of the pro-rated amount and the new service plan will be charged to the account.

Changing Between new inReach Consumer Plans

When changing between Enabled, Essential, Standard, or Premium tiers on the newer inReach Consumer plans, upgrades take effect immediately and the remaining duration of the current bill cycle and monthly message allotment are pro-rated accordingly within 24 hours. Downgrades take place at the end of the current billing cycle.


Changing a Plan Using the Garmin Website

NOTE: If your inReach subscription is currently suspended, you must select the option to reactivate if you wish to change it to the Enabled plan (or any other available plan). For instructions, see - Reactivating a Suspended inReach Device.

  1. Log in to the Subscription Portal: https://www.garmin.com/account/subscriptions/

    • When signed into your account at Garmin.com, the Subscription Portal can also be accessed by selecting Account Profile Icon in the top right corner of the page, then Account. From there select SUBSCRIPTIONS & SERVICE PLANS on the left of the page.

  2. Select MANAGE on the subscription you want to update.

  3. Select CHANGE PLAN.

  4. Select SELECT THIS PLAN for the desired plan.

    NOTE: If you currently have an inReach Freedom or inReach Annual Contract subscription plan, select NEW PLANS or OLD PLANS, then select SELECT THIS PLAN for the desired plan. inReach Freedom plans are still able to move up or down between Freedom plan tiers until their next annual renewal date. inReach Annual plans are no longer able to move up or down between Annual plan tiers and will only show their current plan tier under OLD PLANS.

  5. Check the box to agree to automatic renewal, review the plan details and terms and conditions, then select ACCEPT & CONTINUE.

  6. Select CONTINUE after reviewing the details about your next bill.

  7. Select COMPLETE PLAN CHANGE.

Changing a Plan Using the Garmin Messenger™ App

NOTE: The following process only works with Garmin Messenger app compatible devices.

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select Device.

    • If Device is not displayed at the bottom of the app, you will need to pair your inReach.

  3. Select your current plan type below the picture of your inReach device.

    If your plan is currently suspended, select Suspend below the picture of your inReach device.

  4. Select Change Plan.

  5. Select SELECT THIS PLAN for the desired plan.

    NOTE: If you currently have an inReach Freedom or inReach Annual Contract subscription plan, select NEW PLANS or OLD PLANS, then select SELECT THIS PLAN for the desired plan. inReach Freedom plans are still able to move up or down between Freedom plan tiers until their next annual renewal date. inReach Annual plans are no longer able to move up or down between Annual plan tiers and will only show their current plan tier under OLD PLANS.

  6. Check the box to agree to automatic renewal, review the plan details and terms and conditions, then select ACCEPT & CONTINUE.

  7. Select CONTINUE after reviewing the details about your next bill.

  8. Select COMPLETE PLAN CHANGE.

Changing a Plan Using the Earthmate® App

NOTE: The following process only works with Earthmate Compatible inReach Devices.

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Select Three horizontal lines (Android™) or More (iPhone®/iPad®).

  3. Select My inReach.

  4. Select Manage Subscription.

Changing From Consumer Plans to Professional Flex Plans
