Multiple Downloaded Maps on Outdoor Handhelds

Most current Garmin outdoor products that support maps can have multiple Downloadable Content (DLC) maps stored on their internal memory or microSD/SD card at once.

However, some older devices can only have one DLC map stored on either the internal memory or a 4gb SD card.

Additional maps that are sent to these devices must have the file name gmapsupp.img in order to be read by the device. Garmin software automatically assigns this file name any time a DLC is downloaded or maps are installed via Garmin MapInstall™ software. Since two files with the same name cannot exist in the same directory, only one additional map can be used at a time. Installing additional maps will overwrite any existing map on the internal memory or a 4gb SD card with the most recently added map.

To overcome this limitation and use multiple DLC products, either:

  • Purchase multiple 4gb microSD cards, one for each DLC product -or-
  • Purchase a newer device that supports multiple DLC products

These solutions will allow you to purchase and use more than one DLC product at a time with a given device.
