Boat Icon on the Navigation Chart is Facing the Wrong Direction

There are several reasons a boat icon can be facing the wrong direction on a map display. These can range from one's map orientation to the type of accessories being used in conjunction with the Garmin Marine Device.

Consider each map orientation setting below and determine which option works best.

  • North Up - The top of the map display will always reference North

  • Track Up - The top of the map display will always reference the current track heading

  • Course Up - The top of the map display will always reference the direction of navigation as facing up

To change the settings of the map orientation, refer to the device's Owner's Manual .

Another common reason that a boat's icon can face the wrong direction on a map display is if a Heading Sensor or an Autopilot with a heading sensor is installed, connected to the chartplotter, and the sensor is not calibrated properly. To correct this, calibrate the heading source. Refer to the heading sensor's manual for information on how to perform this step.

If a Garmin autopilot is connected, refer to the related content for additional troubleshooting.

Once the appropriate adjustments have been made, the boat's icon should travel in the correct direction on the map's display.
