Voice Command Isn't Working on an Automotive Device

 When using the Voice Command feature on your compatible device, you may see a message indicating it is unavailable for your chosen language (e.g. "Voice Command support is not available for American English" or "This feature is not supported for the United States in American English").

This can be caused by an incorrect map region, incorrect language settings, or a missing file.


Check Map Region

Voice Command will only function when full coverage of a device's preloaded map is installed. See the owner's manual of your device for instructions to view the myMaps screen and check the installed map coverage.

Voice Command Will Not Work in the Following Situations:

  • A smaller region of the preloaded map was loaded to the device during a previous map update:

    • To get full coverage back, update the maps with a memory card installed in the device.

  • Mapping files may be missing or have become corrupted. If full coverage of mapping is already installed, reinstall the maps with Garmin Express™ software.

  • Voice Command is used in a region which was not preloaded on the device.

    • For example, a North American device is preloaded with the map of North America. Europe maps can be added and used with this device, but Voice Command will only function with the North America map.


Check Voice and Text Language

Verify that your device's voice and text languages are both set to a compatible text-to-speech language. Only certain voice and text languages are compatible with Voice Command. For a list of compatible languages, see FAQ  Voice Languages that are Compatible with Voice-Activated Navigation

Restore the Speech Recognition File

A file is preloaded on your device which helps Voice Command operate properly. Restoring this file can help resolve issues with the Voice Command feature.

To Restore the Speech Recognition File:

1. Install and run Garmin Express™ software.

2. Connect the device to the computer with a USB cable.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your device (if prompted), or select your previously saved device.

4. Click Tools & Content.

5. Click the Utilities tab.

6. Expand Language Files under Optional Updates.

7. Select the desired language(s).

8. Click Install Now.

The download will start automatically. When the download completes, the message "Updates complete!" will appear near the top of the Garmin Express™ software window. You can then eject and unplug the device from the computer.


If Voice Command is Not Responding to the Wake-Up Phrase

When you announce 'Voice Command', the device will wake up displaying a menu of voice commands to choose from. If your device is not responding in this manner you may need to enable the voice command feature.

NOTE: Some devices do not have the ability to enable/disable voice command so this troubleshooting would not apply.

To Enable Voice Command on Most Garmin Devices:

  1. Touch Apps or Tools.
  2. Touch Voice Command.
  3. Touch the Wrench or Menu icon in the upper left corner.
  4. Touch Voice Command to checkmark (enable).

The Voice Command feature will now be enabled and respond to the wake-up phrase.
