Updating Software on the GPSMAP 296, GPSMAP 396, GPSMAP 495, and GPSMAP 496
The GPSMAP® 296, GPSMAP 396, GPSMAP 495, and GPSMAP 496 handheld navigators have two different methods of updating operating software.
Note: All portable software is available free of charge. Databases (navigation, obstacle, terrain, etc.) require a subscription to download from the flyGarmin.com® website.
The Preferred Method for Downloading Software to your Device is Directly through a Windows PC:
Connect the device to a USB 2.0 port on your computer via USB. These units require slower data transfer speeds, therefore the newer USB 3.0 ports that newer PCs have will not work. If your computer does not have a USB 2.0 port, you can buy a USB 2.0 adapter at any electronics store and plug in to your computer. The GPSMAP will connect directly to this adapter.
Also, ensure your Interface settings on the device are set to Garmin Data Transfer. The Transfer Mode should be set to Host. To do this, press the Menu button twice to get to the Main Menu. Scroll down to Setup, then scroll right until you get to Interface (On the GPSMAP 296, the Interface setting is called Comm 1.)

- Once completed, (safely eject) the device from your computer.
- You may need to power cycle the device
- The new software version should be on the Splash Screen/Introduction Screen.
The Other Method for Installing Software to your Device is through the Garmin WebUpdater Program.
Important: If this is your first time using a computer with your device, you will need to download and install the WebUpdater program.
- Connect your GPSMAP 296, GPSMAP 396. GPSMAP 495, or GPSMAP 496 to a USB 2.0 on your computer with the USB cable.
- Launch the WebUpdater program.
- When the WebUpdater Wizard window opens, click Next to continue.
- Once your device is found by the computer, click Next.
- The following page will display what new software version is available for your device. Click Next to review the software release notes.
- Once you review the software release notes, click Next to review the software change history.
- Click Next to review the License Agreement.
- Check the box to agree to the terms and conditions and click Next to begin the software update installation. Please do not unplug your device from the computer while the update is happening.
- Once the software update is finished. You can click Next to see if there are additional updates available for your device. You can also click Cancel if you wish to be finished.
- You may now safely eject (link) your device from the computer.
Note: We strongly recommend using a Windows PC to update GPSMAP devices. Apple computers have trouble recognizing GPSMAP devices on “El Capitan” and newer operating systems.
