BaseCamp for Windows Fails to Launch Google Earth or Google Earth Pro

When selecting the option to view data in Google Earth in either Garmin BaseCamp™ software for Windows, the application displays the message:

"This feature requires Google Earth to be installed and running.  Please launch Google Earth, then try again."

This message continues to display even if Google Earth is properly installed and running on the computer.

Resolution:

  • The latest release of Google Earth and Google Earth Pro will no longer allow BaseCamp™ software to automatically launch the application. It is advised to update BaseCamp™ to the latest version; the non-functioning Google Earth commands within BaseCamp™ have been removed. For instructions on updating BaseCamp™ see the Related Content below.
  • In order to view the BaseCamp™ program's user data in Google Earth or Google Earth Pro, the data will first need to be manually exported from BaseCamp™ as a raw .kml file. The raw file can be imported and opened in the desired Google application.   When exporting the data for this purpose, choose the KML 2.2 Document, v2 (.kml) format.  Please see the Related Content below for Exporting User Data from BaseCamp™.

To Import .kml Data into Google Earth:

  1. Open Google Earth or Google Earth Pro
  2. Click File
  3. Click Open...
  4. Browse to and select the file that was exported using BaseCamp™
  5. Click Open

The data will now appear in Google Earth or Google Earth Pro Places.
