Creating and Editing inReach Quick Text Messages

Quick Text messages are helpful to save time not having to type out commonly-used phrases and replies. These messages must be updated in the Garmin Messenger™ app, the Earthmate® app, or on the Garmin Explore™ website before heading out on a trip and cannot be edited on the inReach® device itself.

Use the instructions below for a compatible app or the website to add, edit, or delete Quick Text messages from an inReach account.

Garmin Messenger App

Recommended for Most Garmin Users

NOTE: The following processes only work with Garmin Messenger app compatible inReach devices.

Adding Quick Text Messages

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select Quick Text Messages.

  4. Select Plus Add Quick Text.

  5. Enter the text of your Quick Text message.

    Each message is limited to 160 characters.

  6. Select Save. Repeat this process for each Quick Text message being added.

    There is a limit of 20 Quick Text messages.

Editing Quick Text Messages

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select Quick Text Messages.

  4. Select the Quick Text you wish to edit.

  5. Enter the text of your Quick Text message.

    Each message is limited to 160 characters.

  6. Select Save.

Deleting Quick Text Messages

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select Quick Text Messages.

  4. Select the Quick Text you wish to delete.

  5. Select Trash Can.

Earthmate App

Compatible With Previous inReach Models Not Compatible With the Garmin Messenger App

NOTE: The following processes only work with Earthmate app compatible inReach devices.

Adding Quick Text Messages

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Select Three Lines Menu Icon > Messages (Android™) or Messages (iPhone®/iPad®).

  3. Select Message Bubble Icon (Android) or Pencil Icon (iPhone/iPad). 

  4. Touch Lightning Bolt Quick Message Icon next to the Type Message field (shown below).

  5. Select Pencil.

  6. Select Green Plus Symbol Add Quick Text.

  7. Enter the text of your Quick Text message.

    Each message is limited to 160 characters.

  8. Select Save. Repeat this process for each Quick Text message being added.

    There is a limit of 20 Quick Text messages.

Editing Quick Text Messages

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Select Three Lines Menu Icon > Messages (Android™) or Messages (iPhone®/iPad®).

  3. Select Message Bubble Icon (Android) or Pencil Icon (iPhone/iPad). 

  4. Touch Lightning Bolt Quick Message Icon next to the Type Message field (shown below).

Deleting Quick Text Messages

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Select Three Lines Menu Icon > Messages (Android™) or Messages (iPhone®/iPad®).

  3. Select Message Bubble Icon (Android) or Pencil Icon (iPhone/iPad). 

  4. Touch Lightning Bolt Quick Message Icon next to the Type Message field (shown below).

  6. Select the Quick Text you wish to delete.

Garmin Explore Website

Use explore.garmin.com if You Are Unable to Use One of the Apps Above

IMPORTANT: Be sure to log into the account the inReach device is assigned to. After making changes within a Garmin Explore™ website account, make sure to sync the device and app so they reflect the changes. See Related for instructional links on how to sync.

Adding Quick Text Messages

  1. Log in to the Garmin Explore website.

  2. Select MESSAGES.

    NOTE: On mobile browsers, select Two Horizontal Lines Icon in the top left, then MESSAGES.

  3. Select Add, located at the bottom of the list of Quick Text messages.

  4. Enter the text of your Quick Text message.

    There is a limit of 20 Quick Text messages and each message is limited to 160 characters.

  5. Select Save. Repeat this process for each Quick Text message being added.

  6. Sync the device.

Editing Quick Text Messages

  1. Log in to the Garmin Explore website.

  2. Select MESSAGES.

    NOTE: On mobile browsers, select Two Horizontal Lines Icon in the top left, then MESSAGES.

  3. Select Edit, next to the Quick Text message.

  4. Enter the text of your Quick Text message.

    Each message is limited to 160 characters.

  5. Click Done. Repeat this process for each Quick Text message being edited.

  6. Sync the device.

Deleting Quick Text Messages

NOTE: The first three Quick Text messages can be edited, but they cannot be deleted.

  1. Log in to the Garmin Explore website.

  2. Select MESSAGES.
    NOTE: On mobile browsers, select Two Horizontal Lines Icon in the top left, then MESSAGES.

  3. Select Edit, next to the Quick Text message.

  4. Click Delete.

  5. Sync the device.
