Why Can't I Add 911 as a Contact on My inReach?

Some states, counties, and cities allow for SMS messaging with 911 emergency services. Garmin inReach® satellite communicators cannot SMS message 911 emergency services and 911 cannot be added as a contact. Your inReach device does not communicate through cell towers. Because of this, 911 emergency services would not be able to locate your inReach device.

In the event of an emergency, use the SOS function to contact Garmin Response™ Center. Garmin Response team uses SMS gateways instead. This gives them the ability to not only communicate, but also to determine the location of your inReach device.
