Why won't my Forerunner 110/205/210/305 transfer to the computer or take a charge?

A situation may arise where your Forerunner will not charge or communicate with the computer. If this occurs, there are a few troubleshooting options that can be performed.

  1. Ensure charging clip or cradle is making a good connection. In some cases, one of the copper charging contacts on the back of the watch and/or charging accessory may have become oxidized.
    1. Disconnect charging accessory
    2. Thoroughly clean the contacts on the watch and charging accessory. The following non-abrasive cleaning agents are safe and effective options for cleaning the contacts:
      • Rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl)
      • Eye glass cleaner
      • Electronic screen wipes
      • Pencil eraser
    3. Connect the watch to the computer to charge and transfer workout
  2. If the Forerunner is still not charging or communicating with the computer a soft reset can be performed. No user information will be lost by doing this reset. The reset is most effective when the watch is connected to the computer.
    1. To soft reset the Forerunner 110/210:
      1. Seat Forerunner 210 or 110 to charging clip
      2. Plug USB charging cable into the computer
      3. Press and hold Light button for 30 seconds. The watch should power on once Light is released.
      4. Confirm watch is charging*
    2. To soft reset the Forerunner 205/305:
      1. Plug USB charging cradle into the computer
      2. Press and hold Mode and Lap/Reset for 10 seconds
      3. Release both buttons
      4. Power the watch on once it starts to charge

The Forerunner should now be communicating properly with the computer. It is recommended that you update the device firmware to the latest version. Any applicable updates can be installed using Garmin Express.

If the 110/210 is not recognized by a computer within one minute of being connected, a boot block will be necessary. For more information on performing a boot block, please review the FAQ titled "What can I do if my fitness mass storage device is not being recognized by the computer?".

* When properly connected to a power source, the display on the Forerunner 110/210 will show "Garmin" followed by the battery charging indicator.

If the 205/305 is not recognized by a computer within one minute of being connected, use the procedure below.

  1. Disconnect the device
  2. Press and Hold Up + Power while connecting to computer
  3. Device will be detected within one minute

The Forerunner should now be communicating properly with the computer.
