It may not be possible to load the entire map update to some Garmin GPS devices using Garmin Express. As map updates increase in detail, they also increase in size and some devices do not have enough internal memory to store the entire update.
If the device doesn't support the SD card feature1 there will be an option to choose a region that will fit on the internal memory and an additional option to send the complete map image to the computer, if the full image is wanted. Once the update is complete, the remaining maps can be installed to an SD or microSD data card (refer to the manual to see which card is right for the device) via the Garmin MapInstall application.
During the Garmin Express map update, to install the maps to the device and the computer:
If the device has already been updated, the reinstall option can be used to install maps to the computer only. For more information, see the FAQ: How do I install maps to my computer with Garmin Express?
Additional maps can be sent from MapInstall2 to an SD or microSD card. For more information about using MapInstall, refer to the FAQ: How do I install mapping to my device with MapInstall?
Once the maps have been installed to the computer and MapInstall has been used to load the remaining maps to the SD or microSD card, the device will have the updated version of the pre-loaded maps.
Note: The data card must remain in the device in order to view the additional maps loaded to it.
1These devices require the use of MapInstall to install map data to an SD card if it does not fit directly on the device during the map update:
2Mac users will need to download and install the MapInstall application to the computer.
