Updating the Software of the GPSMAP 695 or GPSMAP 696

The GPSMAP® 695 or GPSMAP® 696 handheld navigator has three different methods of updating the operating software.

On a Windows Computer with an SD card

When using an SD card to transfer the update from the computer to the device, follow this Software Link and select Download next to the Microsoft Windows – SD Card Download:

1. Agree to the terms to proceed to the download page.
2. Select on the blue Download button.

3. Once downloaded, select on the file and run it.
   • You may need to allow changes on your computer to go to the next step.
4. Select Next to proceed with the download.
5. Select the SD Card from the list of drives then select Next to start the installation to the SD Card
   • 
6. Once complete, safely eject the SD Card from your computer.
7. Turn on the device and insert the SD card into the slot.
8. You should see a prompt asking you to update the unit. 
9. Select update and wait for it to install and restart automatically.

On a Windows Computer with a USB Cable

When connecting a Microsoft Windows computer directly to the device, follow this Software Link and select on the Download for Microsoft Windows Installer:

1. Agree to the terms to proceed to the download page.
2. Select on the blue Download button.
   • 
3. Once downloaded, select on the file and run it.
   • You may need to allow changes on your computer to go to the next step.
4. Select Next to proceed with the download.
5. Select the device from the list then select Next to start the installation.
   • 
6. Once complete, safely eject the device from your computer.
7. Turn on the device.
8. You should see a prompt asking you to update the unit. 
9. Select update and wait for it to install and restart automatically.

On another Operating System (like a Mac)

When updating the device on a Mac (or Other Operating System) an SD card should be used. 

1. To start, go to this Software Link and select the Download for Other Operating Systems – SD card.
   • 
2. Agree to the terms to proceed to the download page.

3. Select on the blue Download button:

   • 

4. Once downloaded, select and open the zipped folder.

5. Find the “Garmin” folder then drag or copy and paste the folder to the SD Card. 

6. Once complete, safely eject the SD Card from your computer.
7. Turn on the device and insert the SD Card.
8. You should see a prompt asking you to update the unit. 
9. Select update and wait for it to install and restart automatically.
