Creating Icons for Custom POIs

Custom icons can be created in most graphics editing programs and used to display the locations of custom points of interest (POIs) on the map. with POIs on a device.

When Creating a Custom Icon, the Image Must be in the Following File Type, Size, and Color Palette:

  • File type: .bmp.

  • Color palette: RGB, 8-bit or 16-bit.

  • Size: 24x24 pixels.

  • Transparency color is magenta RGB: R=255, G=0, B=255.

  • The file name must be identical to the name of the .csv or .gpx file (e.g. 'POI.gpx' and 'POI.bmp').

After Creating the Icon, One of the Following Programs can Associate the Custom Icon With the Custom POI(s):

POI Loader

Download links and information about the POI Loader application can be found in Points of Interest (POI) Loader. Any POI files created with Garmin MapSource will require the use of POI Loader to send the POIs to your device.

Custom image .bmp files located must be saved in the same directory as the .csv or .gpx files for POI Loader to process them correctly. When the folder containing these two files is selected in POI Loader to export to the device, the .bmp icon will automatically be associated to the .csv or .gpx file that shares its name. Both the data in the .csv or .gpx file and the icon in the .bmp will be included in the .gpi file created by POI Loader.
