Install maps to a device with MapInstall

Garmin MapInstall is an application that is used to transfer maps installed on a computer to a compatible Garmin device. This software is available for both Windows and Mac OS X and can be downloaded for free from the Mapping Software page of the Garmin website.

Once MapInstall is installed, choose your operating system below for instructions to install the maps to the device:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Windows

To install maps to a Garmin device or memory card:

  1. Connect the Garmin device to the computer
  2. Open MapInstall
  3. Select the device or SD card
    • If all compatible map products installed on the computer will fit completely on the selected device, MapInstall will give options to Continue or Customize
      • Selecting Continue will send all of the maps that will fit on the device
      • Selecting Customize will allow individual maps to be selected and give the option to choose smaller segments of each map by clicking Advanced/Partial Install...
    • If all map products installed on the computer will not fit completely on the selected device, MapInstall will give the option to Continue
      • This will allow individual map products to be selected and give the option to choose smaller segments of each map by clicking Advanced/Partial Install...
    • When loading the map to an SD card through a memory card reader or to an older Garmin device, MapInstall will only give the option to Continue
      • MapInstall will allow the selection of individual map segments
  4. Click Continue
  5. Click Install
  6. Click Finish

Tips:

  • When selecting the maps, the storage meter displays how much space the selected maps require in relation to the available storage on the device and/or SD card. This meter appears below the map on the map selection screen.
  • To select or deselect an individual map segment, left-click to select or right-click to deselect the segment.
  • To select multiple map segments at once, click and drag a box around all of the map segments to be selected, then release the mouse button. To deselect multiple map segments, use the right mouse button instead.

After MapInstall has finished loading the maps, disconnect the device. The maps will be available for use.

Mac OS X

Before starting the map installation, ensure that the Mac is not set to go to sleep while the installation is in progress.

To prevent the Mac from sleeping:

  1. Click the Apple in the menu bar
  2. Click System Preferences
  3. Click Energy Saver
  4. Check the Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off box.
    • If the checkbox is not available, drag the Computer sleep slider to Never.

 

To install maps to a Garmin device or memory card:

  1. Connect the Garmin device to the computer
  2. Open MapInstall
  3. Select the device or SD card
    • If all compatible map products installed on the computer will fit completely on the selected device, MapInstall will give options to Send Maps, or Customize
      • Selecting Send Maps will send all of the maps that will fit on the device
      • Selecting Customize will allow individual maps to be selected and give the option to choose smaller segments of each map by clicking Advanced/Partial Install...
    • If all map products installed on the computer will not fit completely on the selected device, MapInstall will give the option to Continue
      • This will allow individual map products to be selected and give the option to choose smaller segments of each map by clicking Advanced/Partial Install...
    • When loading the map to an SD card through a memory card reader or to an older Garmin device, MapInstall will give the option to Continue
      • MapInstall will allow the selection of individual map segments
  4. Click Continue
  5. Click Install
  6. Click Finish

 

Tips:

  • Click on a segment to select or deselect the segment.
  • To select multiple map segments at once, click and drag a box around all of the map segments to be selected and then release the mouse button. To deselect multiple map segments, hold the Command key while dragging.
  • Choose Clear Selection from the Edit menu in the menu bar to deselect all selected maps

After MapInstall has finished loading the maps, disconnect the device. The maps will be available for use.
