GPSMAP Series Handheld Not Connecting After Updates
As of November 2021, updates were released for both the GPSMAP® series handhelds and the Garmin Explore™ app that improve how the handheld connects with the app via Bluetooth. If you had previously paired your handheld with a phone or tablet, you may need to remove the existing pairing from your phone and reconnect the handheld. To do this, follow the steps below.
Removing the Existing Pairing
Android Devices
The handheld will need to be removed from the Garmin Connect™ app, the Garmin Explore app, and the phone or tablet's Bluetooth settings.
Garmin Connect App
Open the Garmin Connect app.
Access the menu by selecting More (bottom right).
Scroll down and select Garmin Devices.
Press and hold the image of the handheld.
Select Remove Device from the pop-up box.
Acknowledge the message by touching REMOVE.
Garmin Explore App
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select Devices.
Select the image of the handheld.
Select the three dots in the top right, then Remove Device.
Phone or Tablet Bluetooth Settings
NOTE: Your settings may vary based on the model of your phone. Consult your phone owner's manual for specific steps.
Access the phone's settings menu and touch Bluetooth.
Under PAIRED DEVICES touch the icon next to the handheld.
Select Unpair.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for any additional GPSMAP pairings.
iOS Devices
The handheld will need to be removed from the Garmin Connect™ app, the Garmin Explore app, and the iPhone or iPad's Bluetooth settings.
Garmin Connect App
Open the Garmin Connect app.
Access the menu by selecting More (bottom right).
Scroll down and select Garmin Devices.
Select the image of the handheld.
NOTE: You can also choose to swipe left on the line of the device that you wish to remove; if you choose this option, skip to the next section for the Garmin Explore app.
Select (upper right corner).
Select Remove Device.
Select Remove from the pop-up box.
Garmin Explore App
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select Devices.
Select the image of the handheld.
Select the three dots in the top right, then Remove Device.
iPhone or iPad Bluetooth Settings
Access the iPhone or iPad's settings menu and touch Bluetooth.
Under MY DEVICES touch the icon next to the handheld.
Select Forget This Device.
If the handheld is powered on and within range, it may automatically show up under DEVICES. Do not pair the handheld from this screen.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for any additional GPSMAP pairings.
NOTE: The Garmin Explore app is required for the GPSMAP 66i, 86i, and 86sci to sync inReach® account changes to the device.
Garmin Explore App
Ensure that the Garmin Explore app is up to date, then follow the steps below to pair the handheld.
Open the Garmin Explore app.
If prompted, read and agree to EULA, and sign in.
Select Devices.
Select either + Pair a New Device or .
The app will then begin searching for devices.
On the GPSMAP handheld, press MENU twice to reach the main menu, then select Setup > Bluetooth > Pair Mobile Device or Continue.
If the GPSMAP handheld was already connected to the Garmin Connect app prior to connecting with the Garmin Explore app, it may already display as Connected. If connected, skip to the next step.
In the Garmin Explore app, select Connect It and follow the prompts to complete the setup.
Garmin Connect App
Open the Garmin Connect app.
Access the menu by selecting More (bottom right).
Select Garmin Devices.
Select Add Device.
On the handheld, press MENU twice to reach the main menu, then select Setup > Bluetooth > Pair Mobile Device or Continue.
If the GPSMAP handheld was already connected to the Garmin Explore app prior to connecting with the Garmin Connect app, it may already display as Connected. If connected, skip to the next step.
In the Garmin Connect app, select Connect It after Garmin Connect finds your handheld, then follow the prompts.
If it does not display, select Browse all compatible devices and search for your model.
