What Is the Elevation Corrections Feature in Garmin Connect?
The Elevation Corrections feature in Garmin Connect determines where the elevation information reported for your recorded activity comes from. The feature will either be enabled or disabled for an activity by default based on if the device that recorded the activity featured a barometric altimeter sensor or not.
Devices With a Barometric Altimeter Sensor
Elevation Corrections will be turned off and elevation data displayed in the activity has been recorded by the Garmin device.
NOTE: vivomove 3 series watches will not display elevation data at all when you turn off elevation corrections in Garmin Connect.
Devices Without a Barometric Altimeter Sensor
Elevations Corrections will be turned on. Each trackpoint of your activity is updated to the elevation data from professional survey data in Garmin Connect since it will be more accurate than the GPS elevation recorded by the device.
Why Turn On Elevation Corrections if My Device Has a Sensor?
There are a few reasons why you would want to use the elevation data in Garmin Connect over what was recorded by your device including:
- Your device has a clogged port leading to the sensor, resulting in incorrect readings.
- You recorded your activity when there was an incoming or departing low or high pressure system.
- This can cause your starting elevation reading to be too high or low. The elevation gain/loss is typically not affected by this.
- You recorded your activity on a windy day.
- Wind can affect the sensor causing an inaccurate reading. If you are going to record an activity outdoors when it is windy we suggest wearing the sleeve of a shirt or coat over the watch.
How Do I Enable/Disable Elevation Corrections in Garmin Connect?
NOTE: Changing this setting within an activity will not change how the Elevation Corrections are applied for future activities.
Sign in to Garmin Connect web from a web browser.
Select Activities in the expanded navigation bar on the left.
Select All Activities.
Select an activity name.
From the activity details, access Elev Corrections from the right side just below the image of the Garmin device that was used to record the activity as shown below.
Why Are the Elevation Values Different Between Garmin Connect and a Third-Party Website?
If you are using a device without a barometric altimeter sensor, it is normal to see a difference between the elevation values seen in Garmin Connect versus what is displayed in a third-party site (such as Strava). This is because the third-party site very likely uses a different source for their elevation data.
