How to Activate an inReach SE(+)/Explorer(+) or Mini

Before you can use the messaging and SOS functions on an inReach SE®, inReach SE+, inReach Explorer®, inReach Explorer+, or inReach® Mini satellite communicator, you must create an account and activate a service plan for the device. NOTE: Credit or debit card information needs to be provided in order to complete activation steps below. As of September 18, 2024, inReach subscriptions can be activated in the Earthmate® app as long as the app is up to date. For steps, see - Updating the Earthmate Application

Activating an inReach Device

If you are activating a brand new device, proceed with the steps for your device below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, refer to your Owner's Manual.


inReach Mini

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have a device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - .

2. Pairing the inReach Mini

  1. On the inReach® Mini handheld, select Skip if you are prompted to activate.

  2. From the home screen (page with time/battery info) on the inReach Mini, arrow down until you reach the Bluetooth page, then press OK.

  3. Select Pair Device or Pair Again.

  4. In the Earthmate app, touch Handheld Device and Bluetooth Symbol from the top of the Map page.

    • If you do not see the icon select More > Options > Pair Device.

  5. Select Garmin inReach Mini.

  6. Touch Connect.

  7. Touch the inReach device once it appears in the list under Select An Accessory or Available Devices.

    NOTE: It may take 1-2 minutes for the device to appear in the list.

  8. Follow the prompts on your mobile device to enable permissions and finish pairing.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the inReach Mini will be ready to use with the app.

3. Activating an inReach Plan

After completing the steps in the app, take the inReach Mini outside, ensure that it has a clear view of the sky, then follow the prompts on the inReach Mini to complete the activation. If this was skipped on the handheld previously, arrow down from the home screen, press OK on the Activation page, then proceed through the prompts until the device displays Sending Activation and wait for the activation to complete.


inReach Explorer®+

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have a device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - .

  1. On the inReach® device, select Skip if you are prompted to activate.

  2. On the inReach device, select Settings.

  3. Select Bluetooth.

  4. Select Pair Device.

  5. Select Pair Device again.

    • NOTE: If previously paired, select Pair Again instead.

  6. In the Earthmate app, touch Handheld Device and Bluetooth Symbol from the top of the Map page.

  7. Select your inReach model.

  8. Touch Connect.

  9. Touch the inReach device once it appears in the list under Select An Accessory or Available Devices.
    NOTE: It may take 1-2 minutes for the device to appear in the list.

  10. Follow the prompts on your mobile device to enable permissions and finish pairing.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the inReach Explorer+ will be ready to use with the app.

3. Activating an inReach Plan

After completing the steps in the app, take the inReach Explorer+ outside, ensure that it has a clear view of the sky, then follow the prompts on the inReach Explorer+ to complete the activation. If this was skipped on the handheld previously, select Activation from the home screen, then proceed through the prompts until the device displays Sending Activation and wait for the activation to complete.


inReach SE®+

  1. On the inReach® device, select Skip if you are prompted to activate.

  2. On the inReach device, select Settings.

  3. Select Bluetooth.

  4. Select Pair Device.

  5. Select Pair Device again.

    • NOTE: If previously paired, select Pair Again instead.

  6. In the Earthmate app, touch Handheld Device and Bluetooth Symbol from the top of the Map page.

  7. Select your inReach model.

  8. Touch Connect.

  9. Touch the inReach device once it appears in the list under Select An Accessory or Available Devices.

  10. Follow the prompts on your mobile device to enable permissions and finish pairing.

inReach Explorer

If you are prompted to activate the inReach Explorer as soon as it is powered on, and therefore unable to pair it with Earthmate, the inReach Explorer can be activated online through our website first before following the steps below to pair it in the Earthmate app. For instructions, see - .

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the inReach Explorer will be ready to use with the app.

inReach SE

If you are prompted to activate the inReach SE as soon as it is powered on, and therefore unable to pair it with Earthmate, the inReach SE can be activated online through our website first before following the steps below to pair it in the Earthmate app. For instructions, see - .

Registering Your inReach

Your inReach is registered automatically during activation of service to the device, or adding it to your Garmin Explore™ account. 

The inReach Mini receives software updates through the Garmin Express™ program. Adding these devices to the Garmin Express program to update them will also register them. For more information, see - Updating the Software on Your inReach Mini.
