Formatting a USB Drive for a Chrysler Navigation Software Update
Sometimes a USB drive may require formatting before it can be used to update the software on a Chrysler navigation system.
Note: These instructions are only for formatting a blank USB drive. Pre-loaded media that was received from HERE maps for Chrysler devices should not be formatted. It is important to avoid formatting the pre-loaded drive as this will leave it in an unusable state.
To format the USB drive:
Windows:
Format the USB drive to the FAT or FAT32 format.
- Insert the USB drive into the computer
- Press the Windows key + E
- Click This PC (Windows 10 only)
- Locate the drive representing the USB drive
- To determine which drive is the USB drive remove the USB drive from the computer and observe which drive disappears from the list
- Insert the USB drive again to continue
- Right-click on the USB drive
- Click on Format
- Verify File System is FAT or FAT32
- Change Allocation unit size to Default allocation size
- Ensure Quick Format is checked
- Click Start
Mac OS X:
- Insert the USB drive into the computer
- Open Spotlight (CMD + SPACE on the keyboard)
- Type Disk Utility (in Spotlight search box)
- Press Return on the keyboard
- Click the parent icon for the USB drive in the sidebar on the left (the parent icon is the one that is not indented. This is not necessary on macOS 10.12 and newer)
- To determine which drive is the USB drive, remove the USB drive from the computer and observe which drive disappears from the list
- Insert the USB drive again to continue
- Click on the Erase option on the right
- In the Format drop-down menu, select MS-DOS (FAT)
- In the Scheme drop-down menu, select Master Boot Record
- Available in Mac OS X 10.11+
- Only shown when the View option is set to "Show All Devices" in 10.13+
- In the Name field, type a name/title for the USB drive (Do not leave the name as "UNTITLED or NO NAME")
- Click Erase
These steps will format the USB drive to be readable by the Garmin Express and the Chrysler Navigation system.
