Enable Simultaneous Connection to the Garmin Wi-Fi and the Internet

Simultaneous Connection (Dual Connection) enables connecting to Garmin marine MFD's through Wi-Fi while remaining connected to the internet using the cellular network.

  • Dual connection relies on the Android VPN service to establish connections.

  • It only works when there is no concurrent VPN service active on the Android phone. Running a different VPN service will result in ActiveCaptain app connectivity not working correctly.

  • It overrides native Android OS behavior, which only allows for one connection (Wi-Fi OR Cellular) to be active at any time.

  • It is only relevant for Android, iOS, and the ActiveCaptain app to support parallel connectivity natively.

  • ActiveCaptain app Dual Connection captures and reroutes outgoing data packets from other apps running on the phone. The 4-step configuration described below serves two purposes: to inform the user of the packet capture strategy and establish the VPN connection based on the Android OS's mandatory steps.

  • Simultaneous Wi-Fi and cellular connection on Android works only if the user connects to the chartplotter from the ActiveCaptain app. Make sure that the chartplotter network is not in the favorites list on Android Wi-Fi settings. If present there, the network needs to be forgotten and the connection should be performed from the AC App.

Establishing Dual Connection

  • The connection establishes once a phone connects through a chartplotter Wi-Fi.

  • Dual Connection detection relies on service advertisements received from the chartplotter, and this process might take a few seconds.

  • Once established, the Dual Connection will run as a service, automatically detecting future connectivity sessions. A 'key' icon shows connectivity status when active in the status bar. It is also present as a clickable system notification
