Manage Varia Camera Content in the Varia App
The Varia™ RCT715 rearview radar and Varia™ Vue headlight camera continuously record footage onto its SD card in a loop. When the SD card becomes full, the camera will simply write over the oldest unlocked footage. Any locked or saved footage will be stored in a separate folder on the device and will not be overwritten as the card fills up.
Locked footage is created in two scenarios:
An incident is detected. This locks footage 15 seconds (Vue) or 30 seconds (RCT715) prior to the incident and 60 seconds after the incident.
A manual save is performed from the paired Edge device or with the camera button on the Varia.
For further information on controlling the camera of your Varia, see Varia RCT715 Camera Recording Features. Select a topic below for details on managing your content in the Varia app.
View Your Footage in the Gallery
Footage stored on the Varia Vue and Varia RCT715 can be viewed in the Gallery of the Varia app. Footage will be separated into Locked and Unlocked folders. To view the gallery:
Open the Varia app.
Power on your Varia so it pairs with the app.
Select
to open the Gallery.
Select Front or Rear Gallery if both a headlight and taillight are connected.
Select Locked or Unlocked to view your footage.
Select Join Varia Wi-Fi Network > Join.
Once your device has joined the Wi-Fi® network you will be able to view your saved footage on the Varia. Footage will be saved in chunks, the length of which depends on the device it was recorded on and how it was saved.
Varia Vue: Unlocked footage is stored in 2 minute clips that are stitched into 10 minute chunks in the Varia app. Locked footage will be the length of time that the save was triggered. If saving a clip longer than 10 minutes, it will be stored in 10 minute chunks that are stitched together in the Varia app to appear as one continuous video.
Varia RCT715: Unlocked footage will be stored in 30 second clips. Locked footage is stored in 30 second clips that are stitched into 2 minute clips in the Varia app.
See image below for example of locked footage in the Varia app. An incident recording is indicated by a red asterisk.
Downloading Your Footage
The Varia app allows you to download the footage from your camera and save it on your phone or tablet. To download a clip and save it, select the three dots to the right of a saved clip. You will have options for Download & Delete, Download, or Delete. Downloading the footage will save it to the camera gallery of your phone, and it will be visible in the Downloaded tab of the Gallery in the Varia App.
Trim Footage in the Varia App
Footage in the Gallery of the app can be trimmed for length. This is useful when downloading certain clips as you can cut the clip to the desired length before downloading to save storage space. To trim a clip from the gallery, select the video clip, then select Edit (top right). The start and end of the clip can be trimmed to shorten the length of the clip. Once trimmed to the desired length, select Save Video to save the changes. The shortened clip will be saved to the Downloaded section of the Gallery, and the original will remain on the Varia SD card.
Deleting Downloaded Video or Image From My Phone
After an image or video has been downloaded to the phone's storage deleting it will need to be done from the phones image gallery or photos app.
Reformat the SD Card in The Varia App
New SD cards will most likely need to be formatted before first use. It is also recommended to occasionally reformat the card for the best performance. After you have downloaded footage from the SD card onto your phone's storage, we recommend formatting the SD card in the Varia app.
Open the Varia app.
Power on your Varia so it pairs with the app.
Select
(top right).
Select Devices.
Select your device.
Select Gallery & Storage.
Select Erase & Format, then confirm. This will erase all data on the SD card! This action cannot be undone.
NOTE: Only reformat the SD card using the Varia app. Reformatting the SD card on a computer may reformat it an incompatible format.
Saving Footage to the Vault
The Varia app has integration with the Garmin Vault to store your footage remotely. Footage can be manually uploaded to the Vault from the Varia app, or automatically uploaded to the Vault over Wi-Fi while charging (Varia Vue only). For information on using the Garmin Vault, see Using the Vault in the Varia App.
Managing Footage on a Computer
A computer can be used to manage and delete the footage on a Varia headlight or taillight camera. Footage is stored in the DCIM folder of the Varia, and is broken down into four categories:
EVENT: Used to store footage saved from incident detection events.
PHOTO: Used to store photos captured by the Varia camera.
SAVED: Used to store locked footage as triggered from a paired Edge, Varia app, or using the camera button on the device.
UNSVD: Used to store unlocked footage that will be written over once the SD card is full.
Mac:
Use Finder to view your Varia as an external storage drive. When deleting from the SD card on Mac, a 'Trash' folder is created within the SD card. A second step must be taken to empty the trash as well. Otherwise, the files have technically not be removed from the SD card, so the space is still occupied on the SD card, potentially resulting in a SD card full/lack of space error.
Windows:
Delete files from the SD card from a PC via File Explorer. Access the DCIM folder to view saved content.
I Am Losing the Start of Rides or Other Ride Footage
The beginning of rides will be overwritten if the ride is longer than the free space remaining on your SD card. If your device turns on while in transit, it could overwrite all unlocked footage with new unlocked footage.
Lock Mode
If your Varia is turning on unexpectedly, overwriting previous unsaved footage, use Lock Mode when transporting the device.
Enable Lock Mode:
Power off the Varia by holding the device button for 3 seconds.
Press and hold both buttons for four seconds to put the device in lock mode. This is indicated by a brief yellow flash of the status LED when a button is pressed.
Disable Lock Mode:
Press and hold both buttons for 4 seconds or until the device turns on.
My Phone Will Not Connect to the Varia Wi-Fi Network
You may receive an error message stating "Unable to Join Varia Wi-Fi Network" when attempting to connect. If selecting Try Again does not allow it to connect, follow the solutions below.
Power Cycle the Varia:
Power off the device by holding the device button for 3 seconds.
Power on the device by holding the device button until it powers on.
Restart Your Phone:
A restart of the phone will re-initialize the Wi-Fi and may allow it to pair successfully.
Enable Location Services for the Varia App:
This process varies by phone. For more information refer to your phone manufacturer.
Enable Permissions (iOS Only):
Open the Settings app for your iPhone.
Scroll down to the alphabetical listing of apps installed on the iPhone and select the Varia app.
Confirm Local Network is enabled.
Attempt to join the Varia Wi-Fi network again after performing these steps.
