Importing and Exporting GPX Files on the Overlander

There are a few ways to import GPX files, like waypoints, routes, favorites/saved, and tracks, into the Overlander® GPS navigator. Before following the steps below you must create or sign in to a Garmin Explore™ Account on the Overlander. For instructions, see Logging in to a Garmin Explore Account.


How to Import GPX Files into the Garmin Explore Website and Sync the Overlander via the Wi-Fi Connection


How to Import GPX Files from a microSD Card

  1. Insert the microSD card loaded with GPX files into the Overlander
  2. Open the Garmin Explore App
  3. Touch Library
  4. Touch EDIT (Top Right Hand Corner of Display)
  5. Touch Import to Garmin Explore
  6. Select a box to import the GPX files into a specific Collection or the Unorganized Collection
  7. Touch IMPORT (Top Right Hand Corner of Display)

The files will then be imported into the selected Collection. Be aware that if you continue to import the files from the same microSD card without removing the previously imported files, you will get duplicate information. 


How to Transfer Saved Location and Routes from Another Automotive Device

Note: The Garmin Express™ software is not compatible with backing-up or transferring locations and routes with the Overlander. 

Windows

1. Plug the device into the computer you want to transfer data from

2. On the keyboard, hold down the Windows key + E

 

If using Windows 10, click This PC in the new window 

3. Double-click the drive labeled with the device name

In Windows 10, the drive will be listed under Devices and Drives:

File Explorer

In Windows 7 and 8, the drive may be listed under Devices with Removable Storage or Portable Devices:

4. Double-click the Garmin device drive 

On Windows 7 computers, this may be listed under Devices with Removable Storage.

5. Double-click Internal Storage

Some devices skip this step.

6. Double-click the Garmin folder

7. Double-click the GPX folder

8. Copy the Current.gpx file to the desktop

9. The Current.gpx file can be uploaded to the Garmin Explore Website by following the steps in Importing Waypoints, Routes and Tracks to the Garmin Explore Website

10. Sync the Overlander with the Garmin Explore App by following the steps in Synchronizing Garmin Explore Account Data


Once the syncing is complete, the saved locations will be available in the Garmin Explore App on the Overlander. They will appear in the Library under Waypoints. To navigate to a location stored in the Garmin Explore App see Navigating to a Saved Location. The locations will not be stored in the Saved folder in the Drive menu.


Mac

1. Plug the device into the computer you want to transfer data from

2. Double-click the GARMIN device drive on the Desktop. This can typically be found mounted in the upper-right corner of the screen.

3. Double-click the Garmin folder (some devices skip this step)

4. Double-click the GPX folder

5. Copy the Current.gpx file to the desktop

6. The Current.gpx file can be uploaded to the Garmin Explore Website by following the steps in Importing Waypoints, Routes and Tracks to the Garmin Explore Website

7. Sync the Overlander with the Garmin Explore App by following the steps in Synchronizing Garmin Explore Account Data

Once the syncing is complete, the saved locations will be available in the Garmin Explore App on the Overlander. They will appear in the Library under Waypoints. How to Access Saved Locations and Routes on an Overlander if you Already Transferred them from Another Automotive Device in Garmin Express

Note: This can only be done using a Windows computer. If you don't have access to a Windows computer, refer to the steps above to Transfer Saved Locations from Another Automotive Device.

1. Plug the Overlander into the computer

2. On the keyboard, hold down the Windows key + E

 

If using Windows 10, click This PC in the new window 

3. Double-click the drive labeled with the device name

In Windows 10, the drive will be listed under Devices and Drives:

4. Double-click the Garmin device drive

5. Double-click Internal Storage

7. Double-click the GPX folder

8. Right-click the GarminExpressImport.gpx file

9. Click Cut

10. Right-click on the desktop and click Paste

11. The GarminExpressImport.gpx file can be uploaded to the Garmin Explore Website by following the steps in Importing Waypoints, Routes and Tracks to the Garmin Explore Website

12. Sync the Overlander with the Garmin Explore App by following the steps in Synchronizing Garmin Explore Account Data


Once the syncing is complete, the saved locations will be available in the Garmin Explore App on the Overlander. They will appear in the Library under Waypoints. To navigate to a location stored in the Garmin Explore App see Navigating to a Saved Location. The locations will not be stored in the Saved folder in the Drive menu.


How to Export GPX Files from the Overlander into the Garmin Explore App

How to Export GPX Files from the Overlander onto a Memory Card

Exporting GPX files directly from an Overlander onto a memory card is not supported at this time. However, you can export GPX files from the Garmin Explore Website and copy the file onto a memory card. How to Transfer Saved Locations and Routes from an Overlander to Another Automotive Device

Transferring saved locations and routes from an Overlander to another automotive device is not supported at this time. Transferring data to another Overlander device can be done by exporting a GPX file from the Garmin Explore Website. For instructions see Exporting and Transferring Data from the Garmin Explore Website. Once the GPX file is created, it can be imported to the other user's Garmin Explore Account and synced with their device using the first set of steps above.

How to Transfer Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks from BaseCamp to an Overlander


Windows

  1. Connect the device to your computer
  2. Select an option:
    • To send one or more items or a list to the device:
      • Click on an item, a list, or multiple items (using CTRL+Click or Shift+Click)
      • Click the Device drop-down menu
      • Hover over Send To Device
      • Click on Send ['Name'] to Device or Send Selection to Device
    • To send all saved data to the device:
      • Click on the My Collection folder
      • Click the Device drop-down menu
      • Hover over Send To Device
      • Click Send 'My Collection' to Device
  3. Select the device to which you want to send the selected data
  4. Click OK
  5. Unplug the Overlander and turn it on
  6. Touch the Explore icon
  7. Touch Library
  8. Touch Edit
  9. Touch Import to Explore
  10. Select temp.gpx
  11. Touch Select
  12. Choose a collection or import into unorganized
  13. Touch Import

It may take a few minutes for the data to appear on the device.


Mac

  1. Connect the device to your computer
  2. Select an option:
    • To send one or more individual items to the device:
      • Click on a list or the My Collection folder
      • Click on an item, or multiple items using Command+Click or Shift+Click
      • Click and drag the highlighted items to the device in the upper left-hand corner
    •  To send a list of all saved data to the device:
      • Click on a list or the My Collection folder
      • Click the Transfer drop-down menu
      • Click Send ['Name'] to Device
      • Check the boxes for the data you want to send
      • Click Send
  3. Unplug the Overlander and turn it on
  4. Touch the Explore icon
  5. Touch Library
  6. Touch Edit
  7. Touch Import to Explore
  8. Select temp.gpx
  9. Touch Select
  10. Choose a collection or import into unorganized
  11. Touch Import

It may take a few minutes for the data to appear on the device.
