Changing the MMSI Number Already Programmed into a Garmin VHF or AIS

The Mobile Maritime Safety Identity (MMSI) number is a nine-digit code that acts as a DSC self-identification number and is required to use the DSC capabilities of the radio. The number can only be entered into the radio once and is an FCC regulation.

If the MMSI number was entered incorrectly or changed for any reason, the radio will require reprogramming that must be completed by an authorized service center or returned to Garmin for reprogramming.

To find a local Marine Service Center see the Find a Dealer web page then select Marine Service Center under the Product Category and enter your city or zip code (in the map field).

If there is no service center in the area, the radio can be sent back to Garmin to have it reprogrammed for $50.00 USD. Reprogramming consists of restoring the unit to factory default so that it is ready to input the new MMSI information.  If you need to send the radio to Garmin, contact Garmin Product Support at 1-800-800-1020 Monday - Friday 7 am - 7 pm CST.

NOTE: Programming applies only to units still supported and serviced by Garmin Product Support.
